Position Purpose
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Instructor provides comprehensive instruction in emergency medical care and response to high school students. The instructor equips students with the technical knowledge and practical skills necessary to pursue careers in emergency medical services or continue their education in post-secondary healthcare programs. Instruction includes both theoretical concepts and hands-on training in patient assessment, trauma care, and emergency response, while preparing students for industry-recognized certifications and maintaining a safe, professional learning environment in accordance with New Jersey Department of Education standards.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum of 4–5 years of documented, relevant work experience in emergency medical services (required for CTE certification eligibility in New Jersey).
- Teaching experience is a plus but not required. Training will be provided for candidates with strong industry backgrounds through the alternate route program.
- Must hold or be eligible for a New Jersey Career and Technical Education (CTE) teaching certification under the Health Sciences career cluster (Emergency Medical Technician- Endorsement Code: 4114).
- Must hold a certification as an EMT Instructor through NAEMSE Instructor Course
- Ability to meet all certification and testing requirements established by the New Jersey Department of Education.
- Current EMT certification required; Paramedic certification preferred.
- CPR/BLS Instructor certification required or willingness to obtain.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Ability to teach and relate to high school students effectively.
- Strong knowledge of emergency medical protocols, patient care procedures, and safety standards.
- Proficiency with EMS equipment and patient care documentation systems.
Performance Responsibilities:
Instructional Duties:
- Develop and implement a curriculum aligned with New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Career and Technical Education and the National EMS Education Standards.
- Deliver engaging lessons that accommodate various learning styles and ensure students achieve competency in emergency response and patient care.
- Instruct students in the proper use of EMS equipment.
- Incorporate hands-on lab activities, simulations, and scenario-based training.
- Assess student performance through written and practical evaluations aligned with NREMT standards.
Program Development and Coordination:
- Collaborate with the CTE department to align the EMT program with NJDOE requirements.
- Maintain inventory of equipment and supplies.
- Establish partnerships with local EMS agencies and hospitals.
Student Engagement and Support:
- Provide career guidance.
- Prepare students for EMT certification exams.
- Monitor student progress.
Safety and Compliance:
- Enforce safety and infection control protocols.
- Ensure compliance with district and NJDOE regulations.
Professional Development:
- Stay current with EMS trends and protocols.
- Maintain certifications and attend required training.
