School Year: 2026-2027
Location: Basalt High School
Reports to: Basalt High School Principal
Classification: Certified Exempt - Full-Time (1.0 FTE / 40 hours per week) 
Contract Period: 185 working days

 

Salary Range

 

  • *$54,000 to $83,500 + an Athletic Director stipend of $9704 (Based on education and years of relevant experience) *The annual salary listed above is based on a full-time workday (FTE 1) and a full working calendar. For positions with less than a full FTE or reduced hours, such as part-time or late-start positions, the salary will be prorated accordingly. Certified Salary Schedule. Position Overview

 

  •  The Athletic Director (AD) is responsible for the leadership, organization, and administration of athletic programs at the high school level. This role ensures that athletic activities support the school's educational mission, promote student development, and comply with district and state regulations. This position is split between 75% Athletic Director and 25% Teaching Responsibilities, with an additional stipend provided for extended Athletic Director duties. Teaching duties would include 2 classes of physical education, health or other subject areas. Appropriate CDE Licensure or the ability to obtain is required.

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

  • Scheduling and coordinating athletic events
  • Overseeing game-day administration
  • Hiring and supervising coaches
  • Monitoring student-athlete eligibility
  • Managing athletic facilities
  • Collaborating with school administration and athletic directors across the league and district
  • Ensure all athletic programs meet CHSAA and district eligibility requirements and policies

 

Program Management

 

  • Oversee the full athletic program under the direction of the Principal.
  • Administer all district athletic policies as well as Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) rules and bylaws.
  • Ensure student-athlete eligibility and compliance with participation requirements.
  • Develop and manage interscholastic schedules, including transportation and event logistics.
  • Coordinate and supervise all home athletic contests, ensuring proper administrative presence and game management.
  • Serve as tournament manager for assigned league and playoff events.
  • Promote athletics through media releases and game programs.
  • Manage athletic budgets, purchasing, and facility usage in collaboration with building leadership.
  • Maintain a strong, welcoming program culture centered on sportsmanship and positive guest experiences.
  • Act as liaison with CHSAA, league ADs, district administration, and community partners.
  • Plan and organize athletic assemblies, pep rallies, and awards programs.
  • Take an active role in the behavior management of students, particularly those who are members of athletic teams.
  • Maintain accurate records for eligibility, medical documentation, equipment, contracts, and program history.

 

Personnel Supervision

 

  • Recruit, hire, and supervise all coaches; conduct evaluations and support staff development.
  • Oversee required training certifications for coaches (including first aid and concussion training).
  • Manage conflicts and personnel concerns in collaboration with site leadership.
  • Coordinate schedules, access, and supervision needs across athletic facilities.

 

Administrative / Operational Duties

 

  • Maintain contest contracts, schedules, and communication with officials and partner schools.
  • Coordinate repair and maintenance of athletic facilities with district operations.
  • Oversee transportation, lodging, and related logistics for athletic travel.
  • Manage game-day operations including ticketing, concessions, security, and public address systems.
  • Maintain and track athletic equipment, inventory, suspensions, eligibility files, and required documentation.
  • Attend meetings as required and represent the school in athletic league and state meetings.
  • Assist in informal observation and feedback processes when assigned.

 

Qualifications

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Working knowledge of interscholastic athletic program operations
  • Knowledge of Colorado High School Activities Association (CHSAA) rules, procedures, and eligibility requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly, accurately, and professionally with students, families, coaches, staff, officials, and community members
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage schedules, event logistics, and multiple operational demands in a fast-moving environment
  • Proficiency in office, scheduling, and communication software.

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, coaches, officials, staff, and community members
  • Organize and coordinate multiple events, timelines, and operational tasks
  • Work collaboratively and calmly in a team environment
  • Support athletic events during evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed

Experience and Training Requirements

 

  • Required: Significant successful experience in coaching and managing athletics, game-day management, supervising large-scale athletic events (such as multi-team tournaments), or closely related work.
  • Required: Demonstrated knowledge of high school athletic program operations, including scheduling, eligibility, supervision, event logistics, and acting as the lead administrator of athletic events
  • Required: Experience with athletic budgets, transportation, and facilities coordination.
  • Preferred: Experience supervising coaches, staff, or volunteers in an athletic setting.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a preferred field of study, such as sports management, athletic administration, physical education, kinesiology, exercise science, recreation, or a related field. 

 

Licensing Guidelines

 

  • Possession of or the ability to obtain and maintain a valid Colorado driver's license
  • Ability to complete coursework toward NIAAA Certified Athletic Administrator certification
  • CHSAA and/or NIAAA certification, or progress toward certification, strongly preferred.

 

Working Conditions


This position includes regular standing, walking, reaching, speaking, hearing, and hands-on event support. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The position includes occasional exposure to outside weather conditions, and the work environment is often moderately noisy during athletic events.
