Juvenile Detention Educational Program Intervention Specialist/Tutor
Reports to:  Supervisor/Supt. Designee
Salary Range:  $44,430 - $73,029 Dependent on experience and education
Excellent Benefits Package Consisting of: State Teachers Retirement System, paid sick/personal leave, tax-sheltered retirement contributions, Medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and Employee Assistance Program. 
Employment Status:  Full-Time, 183 days, summer supplemental may be offered
FLSA Status: Exempt

General Description: Under supervision, provides specialized instruction and behavioral support to students with disabilities in a juvenile detention setting through both in-person and virtual (hybrid) learning environments. The Intervention Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), supporting academic and social-emotional growth, and ensuring compliance with state and federal special education requirements.

Qualifications:            

  • Bachelor's Degree required; degree in Special Education preferred
  • Valid Ohio Intervention Specialist License (mild/moderate or moderate/intensive)
  • Experience working with at-risk youth, behavioral needs, or juvenile justice populations preferred
  • Knowledge of Ohio Academic Content Standards and Extended Standards
  • Experience with IEP development, compliance, and progress monitoring
  • Trained in CPI/Non-Violent Crisis Prevention (or willingness to be trained)
  • Ability to deliver instruction in both in-person and virtual formats
  • Strong classroom management, de-escalation, and relationship-building skills
  • Excellent attendance record and punctuality


Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Develops, implements, and monitors IEPs, ensuring compliance with IDEA and Ohio regulations
  • Provides specially designed instruction in core academic areas aligned to student IEP goals
  • Delivers instruction in both secure, in-person detention classrooms and approved virtual platforms as needed
  • Conducts formal and informal assessments to determine student needs and track progress
  • Collects and maintains accurate data on student performance and behavior
  • Collaborates with teachers, tutors, therapists, and detention staff to ensure continuity of services
  • Facilitates and participates in IEP meetings, including documentation and parent/guardian communication when applicable
  • Implements accommodations, modifications, and behavioral intervention plans (BIPs)
  • Maintains a structured, trauma-informed, and supportive learning environment
  • Utilizes de-escalation strategies and follows all facility behavior management and safety protocols
  • Supports transition planning and coordination with sending/receiving schools when applicable
  • Communicates regularly with administration regarding student progress and program needs
  • Participates in professional development, staff meetings, and required trainings
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with FERPA, IDEA, and facility regulations
  • Demonstrates professionalism, flexibility, and cultural responsiveness
  • Provides hands-on learning activities that supplement lessons both online and in-person
  • Delivers Physical Education activities as prescribed
  • Collects necessary paperwork for program, home districts and others, as appropriate
