EMPLOYMENT STATUS:

POSITION SUMMARY:           

Assure the appropriate education of students with disabilities by being a part of the team developing, administering and coordinating the
Special Education program.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee the implementation of Special Education procedures, including referral, evaluation, identification, IEP development and service delivery.
  • Participate in the implementation of the Special Education procedures to the fullest extent possible, particularly in IEP development and monitoring.
  • Supervise and evaluate the Special Education staff, in cooperation with the other administrators.
  • Implement state and federal rules, and supplement those rules, as needed, with local policies and procedures.  Interpret laws and procedures for the staff.
  • Provide or arrange for in-service training on Special Education issues.
  • Assist with the portion of the information management system that pertains to Special Education, including the federal child count.
  • Assist with Special Education grant documents and reports, in coordination with district plans and other grant projects, as appropriate.
  • Assist with a budget for Special Education, including such activities as assisting with the selection of materials and equipment for the Special Education program.
  • Assist the Coordinator of Business Services, Special Education fiscal issues; for example, tuition payment/collection and CAFS (Medicaid) billing.
  • Set program goals in conjunction with district-wide goals.
  • Make recommendations for program and staff changes, including related services and contracted services personnel, as well as the teaching staff, and assist with the selection of staff members.
  • Keep informed about educationally relevant disabilities and teaching methods, and Special Education rules and regulations.
  • Maintain communications and a working relationship with community human services agencies.
  • Participate actively as a member of the administrative team as needed.
     

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attend assigned committee and staff meetings.  Attend professional conferences and training as required to maintain current knowledge to effectively manage the department.
  • Observe all safety, health and confidentiality regulations of the school district.
  • Serve as a role model in the practice of ethical principles, responsible behavior and democratic values.
  • Maintain an appropriate personal appearance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or his designee.  

QUALIFICATIONS:

  •     Master's Degree from an accredited college or university.
        Administrator's certificate/license or Supervisor's certificate preferred.
        Minimum of 3 years of experience in Special Education as a teacher or related service provider.
        Alternative to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Board of Education may find appropriate.
      

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  •     Basic knowledge of educationally relevant disabilities and their effect on child development and learning.
        Basic knowledge of school law and finance.
        Thorough knowledge of Special Education laws, policies and procedures.
        Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
        Well-developed organizational and problem solving skills.
        Well-developed leadership and team building skills.
        Effective active listening skills.

EQUIPMENT OPERATED:

  •     Computer/printer.
        Various office machines; for example, fax machines and copiers.
     

WORKING CONDITIONS:       

  •     Possible exposure to blood, bodily fluids and tissue.
        Occasional operation of a vehicle in inclement weather; that is, being prepared to come to work on all scheduled days, including calamity days.
        Occasional interaction with unruly children and angry or distraught adults.
        Frequent travel between buildings and some travel to workshops and other school districts.
        Some early morning, late afternoon and/or evening work.
        Regular requirement to sit, stand, walk, talk, see, hear, read.

  • Length of Employment:  Admininistrator Contract Term
  • Salary:  Based on current salary Administrator schedule with appropriate experience and training
