JOB TITLE: Secondary General Music/Band/Percussion

DEPARTMENT: Fine Arts

REPORTS TO: Principal and Director of Fine Arts

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

CONTRACT STATUS: Full-time/10-month contract/Extra Duty

SALARY SCHEDULE: Certified / Extra Duty

SUMMARY:  Responsible for being an integral part of the band staff and is expected to be a full participant in rehearsal planning, show design, front ensemble audio design, and implementing a visual technique in conjunction with the band directors. This position will assist with all things percussion related to the marching band, percussion chamber ensembles, and concert band ensembles. This position is also used to teach courses on general music in secondary schools such as Music in Society, AP Music Theory, Music Theory, Sound Audio and Engineering, Modern Music Collective, etc.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: These statements are intended to describe the responsibilities assigned to this position and are not intended to represent an exhaustive list of all responsibilities, duties and skills required.

  1. Attends all competitions in the fall and football games as needed by the Director of Bands.
  2. May teach secondary general music courses as needed.
  3. Attends all rehearsals during the marching band season
  4. Attends band training camp prior to the beginning of the school year. Dates and times TBD by director.
  5. Works with the staff percussion specialist and band team to implement marching/music technique in a full ensemble and sectional settings.
  6. Teaches and cleans drill responsibilities.
  7. May run percussion rehearsals both visually and musically in sectionals and full ensemble settings.
  8. Prepares, lectures and rehearses general music courses as assigned
  9. Coordinates and rehearses concert band percussion (in all grades) as needed in collaboration with the ensemble conductor
  10. Performs other appropriate duties as assigned by the principals, the Director of Band Operations and the Director of Fine Arts.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:  None.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  1. Bachelor's degree in education-related discipline, preferably in music education
  2. Valid Oklahoma teaching certificate with a secondary instrumental music certification
  3. Knowledge of marching arts/marching percussion instruction (DCI, WGI, BOA, etc).
  4. Knowledge of contemporary audio design preferred, but not a requirement.
  5. Knowledge of general music, music history, music theory, and modern music production.

 

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:  Ability to learn front ensemble audio technology skills. Computer literate; excellent written and oral communication ability; strong knowledge of rules, regulations, policies and laws applicable to education and special education. Ability to follow all district policies and procedures. Ability to work independently, displaying initiative and enthusiasm for the tasks being done. Demonstrating strong communication skills, orally and in writing, with faculty, staff, team members, and administrators. Ability to work without supervision, and work as a team player. Ability to document records accurately. Ability to manage confidential information in a manner that respects students, families, and employees. Ability to listen effectively.  Knowledge of overall operation of a functioning percussion program and its relation to the parent band program. Ability to manage budgets, instrument inventories, and personnel.  Knowledge of state and OSSAA policies governing band and extracurricular activities. Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data.  Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills. Be a willing collaborator and teammate. Strong presence in statewide and national music professional organizations. Ability to successfully lead bands and ensembles at performances, contests and other arts events/experiences.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret English language including common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.  

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:  Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

 

REASONING ABILITY:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out written and oral instructions.  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

 

LICENSES and REGISTRATIONS:  Current driver's license in good standing.
