Description

NURSE Purpose Statement The job of NURSE is done for the purpose/s of assessing the health needs of student and implementing individual health care plans directed by healthcare providers; creating and monitoring student health care plans incorporating parent/guardian and/or physician input when necessary; ensuring health care practices comply with the laws relating to student health; providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured students including parental/guardian consent; assisting school-based health clinics at assigned sites; serving as a health care resource to staff; conducting mandated health screenings; monitoring and training assigned health aides; and identifying health issues for referral to appropriate parties for treatment and/or proper follow-up. Teaches CPR, First Aid, and units within the Human Sexuality Curriculum as assigned. This position serves as a key contributor within the educational team. This job reports to District Nurse / Wellness Supervisor Essential Functions Administers mandated screenings (e.g. vision, dental, etc.) for the purpose of referring medical conditions and/or providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children. Administers first aid, medication, and specialized medical treatments (e.g. oral suctioning, catheterization, g-tubes, tracheotomy care, concussion management, CPR, asthma, diabetes, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and/or injured children. Assesses situations involving students' safety, abuse (physical, sexual, drug, etc.) and other health related issues including dental and vision for the purpose of identifying problems, referring for proper treatment, and complying with legal requirements. Collaborates with parents, guardians, health care providers, school psychologist, IEP team, and/or public agencies and mental health providers for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student physical and mental health services; advising parties of changes in student physical and/or mental heath status; recommending further medical intervention; providing health related information; crisis intervention as needed; and/or complying with legal requirements. Conducts age appropriate programs and/or activities in conjunction with classroom curriculum (e.g. health education, nutritional workshops, etc.) for the purpose of supporting established lesson plans. Conducts site assessments (e.g. health issues; student health records; emergency preparedness; flu mitigation; access to medical supplies such as epi pens, asthma inhalers, etc.) for the purpose of identifying issues and/or providing recommendations for improving safety and accessibility. Develops individual student healthcare and/or emergency action plans in collaboration with other health care providers/staff for the purpose of addressing students' health needs; providing direction to site personnel and/or and implementing directions provided by parents and/or physicians. Implements healthcare plans for students with health concerns for the purpose of meeting the needs of students with chronic health concerns and/or accommodation requirements. Maintains student's confidential files and records (e.g. healthcare plans, agency referrals, student injury reports, immunization records, vision screening, scoliosis screening, etc.) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards. Monitors and assesses students referred for illness and/or injury for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care needs and initiating follow-up care as may be indicated. Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, appointments, seminars, and interdisciplinary teams (e.g. IEP team, 504 meetings, telehealth provider appointments with students, etc.) for the purpose of gathering, conveying, and/or sharing information on students health needs, service delivery, and educational programs; offering treatment interventions; and/or improving skills and knowledge. Provides training on a variety of health related subjects (e.g. CPR, disaster preparedness, child abuse, health education, medication management, policies and procedures, substance abuse, growth and development, sexuality instruction, food allergies, STD testing, hygiene, responding to emergencies, etc.) for the purpose of promoting a healthy lifestyle and/or acting as a resource to students, teachers, and other school personnel. Refers students to appropriate providers requiring additional medical attention for the purpose of providing required follow-up treatment and services. Reports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal safety, a positive learning environment, and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines. Researches a variety of topics relating to health and medical care (e.g. wellness, nutrition, treatment protocols, childhood diseases, etc.) for the purpose of providing information to staff, students, parents, and the public. Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, prescription reactions, bleeding, bee stings, concussions, broken bones, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action. Transports health related supplies and equipment to school sites for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items as needed.
