Position Title: Mechanic Assistant / Mechanic / Chief Mechanic
Classification: Service Personnel (WV Code §18A-4-8)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Director of Transportation or designee
Location: Transportation Department / Bus Garage
GENERAL SUMMARY
Service personnel mechanics are responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of school buses and district vehicles to ensure safe and reliable student transportation. Work must comply with WV Code §18A, federal and state transportation safety regulations, and district fleet maintenance procedures.
Each classification level reflects increasing technical skill, responsibility, and supervisory authority.
Mechanic Assistant
- Personnel employed as a mechanic apprentice and helper
- Basic knowledge of vehicle systems
- Ability to assist with repairs and maintenance tasks
Mechanic
- Personnel employed to perform skilled duties independently in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, school buses, and other mechanical and mobile equipment to use in a county school system.
- Experience in vehicle repair and diagnostics
- Ability to independently perform standard mechanical repairs
- Advanced technical knowledge of automotive/diesel systems
- Experience performing complex repairs and leading work assignments
Chief Mechanic
- Personnel employed to be responsible for directing activities which ensure that student transportation or other county board owned vehicles are properly and safely maintained
- Extensive experience in fleet maintenance and repair
- Demonstrated leadership and supervisory experience
- Knowledge of transportation regulations and safety standards
- Ability to manage maintenance operations and personnel
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Thoroughly inspect all new, used, or recently serviced vehicles and equipment to make certain they are in safe operating condition.
- Service and repair vehicles and equipment as requested by drivers and equipment operators.
- Install accessories in vehicles (i.e., lights, cell phones, TV cameras, etc.).
- Clean engines and parts using the proper methods and cleaning materials.
- Rebuild, replace, or repair gas, diesel, or propane engines, if practical.
- Align front and rear wheels of vehicles.
- Inspect tires for wear, wear pattern and damage, and repair/replace tires, if needed.
- Inspect steering and suspension systems for worn or broken parts and repair/replace as needed.
- Diagnose emission control and ignition problems and repair/replace components as needed.
- Diagnose fuel system problems (injectors, pumps, fuel lines, filters, etc.) and repair/replace as needed.
- Inspect exhaust systems for leaks and restrictions and replace components as necessary.
- Repair/replace turbochargers.
- Test and repair/replace charging system components.
- Replace/repair automatic and manual transmissions.
- Inspect and replace or repair driveline components.
- Test and repair/replace starter system components including batteries.
- Check all circuit breakers and fuses and replace as needed.
- Repair/replace primary electrical components.
- Install body parts on vehicles (i.e., doors, windows, steps, seats, bumpers, mirrors, etc.).
- Lubricate all vehicles according to the lubrication schedule.
- Check all fluid levels on a regular basis.
- Maintain a clean organized, and safe working area.
- Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
- Familiar with high-voltage circuit safety on electric buses.
- Keep an up-to-date log on all vehicles and equipment showing repairs and preventative maintenance performed, parts used, date performed, person(s) making repair, and cost.
- Attend workshops to keep up to date on service and repair of vehicles and other mechanical equipment.
- Keep an operating inventory of all parts and materials needed for routine repairs and service.
- Perform such other tasks and assume such other responsibilities as the immediate supervisor may from time-to-time assign.
- Apply safety principles during all working operations.
- CDL with Class B with the passenger (P) endorsement is required or is required to be obtained within a year of being hired as a mechanic.
- This position may work around hazardous materials such as gasoline, diesel, propane, etc.
- The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud, due to the use of power tools and other mechanical equipment.
- Physical Requirements:
- Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to
- complete jobs in various areas.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at
- a time.
- Must be able to stand and walk up to eight hours per day.
- May occasionally be required to bend or twist at the neck and/or trunk, reach with
- hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required (All Levels)
- High school diploma or GED (WV Code §18A-2-5)
- Meets classification requirements under WV Code §18A-4-8
- Successful completion of service personnel competency testing (§18A-4-8e)
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and ability to repair vehicles
- Ability to use diagnostic tools and mechanical equipment safely
- Have or be willing to obtain the required inspectors license and commercial operator's license

Classification: Service Personnel – Maintenance Worker I / II (WV Code §18A-4-8)
Recommended Level Placement: Maintenance Worker I or II (based on skill level and duties)

Reports To: Administrator and/or degingee
Location: Assigned School(s) / Facilities
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Maintenance Worker (Handyman) performs general building maintenance, repair, and upkeep tasks to ensure safe, functional, and well-maintained school facilities. Work includes basic carpentry, minor plumbing, electrical assistance, and general repair duties consistent with the assigned maintenance classification under West Virginia Code §18A-4-8.
This position does not replace licensed trades positions and must remain within the scope of service personnel maintenance classifications.
- Personnel employed to perform routine manual tasks in any operation of the county school system.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Load and unload trucks.
- Cut the lawns, using hand/power mower.
- Rake and/or bag leaves.
- Clean grounds and remove litter.
- Assist in moving furniture, equipment, etc.
- Sweep/clean sidewalks around buildings.
- Check and replace light bulbs.
- Help with snow removal and clearing sidewalks of ice.
- Clean out drainage ditches and/or culverts.
- Maintain the cleanliness of outside spaces such as parking lots, lawns, sidewalks, etc.
- Work with hand and power tools.
- Perform light maintenance and repairs.
- Paint and fill gaps/crevices on walks, sidewalks, etc.
- Assist tradespeople (plumber, electrician, heating and air conditioning mechanic, etc.).
- Identify, document, and report major maintenance and repairs.
- Observe/report all external work performed by vendors and/or facilitate access to the area.
- Repair any broken, loose, or missing hardware in buildings.
- Properly care for and respect the equipment, including power tools, dollies, vacuums, etc.
- Manage inventory and notify supervisor of needed hardware, paints, lightbulbs, etc.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- This position may work around hazardous materials such as gasoline, diesel, etc.
- The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud, due to the use of power tools and other mechanical equipment such as tractors, weed eaters, etc.
- Specific vision abilities required including close, color, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Physical Requirements:
- Must have physical strength, balance, hand-eye coordination, and stamina necessary to complete jobs in various areas.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds and push and/or pull 50-pound loads at a time.
