Bus Operator, 2 hour supplemental run, as needed, PM Activity Run, to transport students from the South Harrison Schools to various points in the SH attendance area. Times are approximately 5-7pm.

Position Title: Bus Operator
Classification: Service Personnel (WV Code §18A-4-8)
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Reports To: Transportation Director and/or designee
Location: Assigned Bus Route / Transportation Department
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Bus Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school and school-related activities. This position operates under strict safety standards and regulatory requirements. Duties must remain consistent with the classification as defined in West Virginia Code and applicable transportation regulations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Perform all duties outlined in WVBE Policy 4336, West Virginia School Bus Transportation Regulations, Procedures, and Specifications for the Design and Equipment of School Buses, and county policies.
- Comply with state and county policies and regulations.
- Interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Maintain a positive work environment and is cooperative with students, peers, other school personnel, parents, and the community.
- Work safely using proper body mechanics and lifting techniques thus decreasing the risk of injury to self and co-workers.
- Obtain and maintain a West Virginia CDL license with passenger and school bus endorsement.
- Successfully complete the West Virginia School Bus Safety Program and pass requisite online certification and skills test.
- Maintain a valid CRP and First Aid Certification.
- Pass physical examination from a Medical Examiner as defined by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration as well as drug and alcohol screenings.
- Preforms pre- and post-inspections pursuant to WVBE Policy 4336.
- Perform safety evaluations pursuant to WVBE Policy 4336.
- Maintain an accurate and efficient morning and evening route schedule and student rosters.
- Operate the bus in a safe and deficient manner and obey all laws.
- Safely use a fire extinguisher.
- Assist and supervise students with disabilities.
- Assist ill students and clean up from student sickness accidents.
- Communicate with students, parents, school officials, and supervisors.
- Mop and clean inside and outside of the vehicle.
- Complete all required paperwork within the prescribed timelines.
- Secure wheelchairs as needed.
- Remove obstructions from the windshield and under wiper blades.
- Adjust all outside mirrors.
- Immediately report mechanical malfunctions for repair.
- Monitor and ensure fluid levels are within prescribed measures.
- Report work-related problems in a professional manner using proper channels including but not limited to resenting problems verbally and/or in writing and allowing for timely resolution.
- Maintain and/or upgrade skills.
- Physical Requirement:
- Frequently required to stoop, reach overhead and shoulder height, stand, walk, lift, pull, push, grasp, talk, hear, see, use interior and exterior rear-view mirrors, and use repetitive motions.
- Frequently required to lift and/or move at least 50 pounds of materials, children, etc.
- Specific vision abilities required include distance vision such as reading road signs and detecting road hazards, near vision such as monitoring instruments as well as student passengers, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Required
- High school diploma or GED (WV Code §18A-2-5)
- Meets the definition of Bus Operator (WV Code §18A-4-8)
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with required endorsements
- Successful completion of required school bus operator training
- Ability to pass required physical examination and drug/alcohol testing
- Ability to pass service personnel competency testing (§18A-4-8e)
- Clean driving record in accordance with state and county requirements
SUPERVISION
- Reports to Transportation Director and/or designee
- Works independently while operating vehicle
- May work with Transportation Aides when assigned
EVALUATION
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with WVBE Policy 5314 and county procedures.
