Description

Assistant Band Director for C.E. King High School Feeder Pattern starting for the 2026-2027 school year

*This position may be housed at C.E. King High School or one of its two feeder middle schools (C.E. King Middle School and/or M.R. Null Middle School), depending on the skills/experience of the candidate relative to the overall fit on the 9-member (plus a Colorguard Instructor) district band staff. This position will be the primary director of at least one NonVarsity or Sub-NonVarsity Band plus will assist with other Band classes/ensembles again based on fit with the full district band staff.

C.E. King High School is a 6A high school in Sheldon ISD of northeast Houston (UIL/TMEA Region 33) fed by 2 3C Middle Schools that both made 1s with multiple ensembles each at UIL Concert & Sight-Reading. The C.E. King HS Band program has experienced a lot growth in both quality and size in the last 5 years, having grown from 120 to 250 wind and percussion students (plus nearly 50 additional students in colorguard), earned 3 consecutive UIL Sweepstakes Awards for success in region marching and varsity concert/sight-reading, qualified for Area Marching consecutively since 2018 (progressing in final rank each year), and this year took 3 full concert bands to UIL Concert & Sight-Reading for the first time, earning 1s/2s in all areas with all 3 ensembles, including Straight 1s at Varsity. Additionally, the C.E. King HS Band program has sponsored Indoor Percussion, Indoor Winds, and Winter Guard groups that have been to TCGC State within the last few years. C.E. King High School is a relatively new facility with multiple band-specific spaces and access to a beautiful and contest-ready Performing Arts Center, and this coming year, the district will open a brand new 9th/10th Grade Campus on the same grounds that will include a Fine Arts Gym/2nd Band Hall for indoor and marching groups.

No specific preference for primary instrument (woodwind, brass, or percussion), but the candidate must not only be proficient in their primary area but feel comfortable working with all instruments, full band ensembles, and corps style marching. At least a bachelor's degree in music, EC-12 Music Educator Certification, and the ability to succeed at Title I campuses is required. Drum corps experience is a plus but is not required, particularly for a strong woodwind candidate who has other demonstrated relevant experience. Percussion candidates would need to be equally comfortable in working with battery and pit percussion, supporting/directing full ensembles, percussion ensemble/indoor percussion, and beginners. All candidates must be enthusiastic self-starters, positive role models and relationship-builders, team players, and able to handle administrative tasks with fidelity and independence.
