Job Summary:

The General Education Teacher's Assistant supports the teacher in charge and supports students in the classroom.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Supervises the behavior of all students in the classroom, throughout school grounds, and on educational trips.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists the lead teacher in planning and teaching the curriculum.
  • Collaborates with the lead teacher, actively creating and maintaining a well-managed, positive classroom environment that supports student engagement and motivation.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with students.
  • Supervises the students in the classroom and throughout the school.
  • Prepares and restores classroom materials and supplies.
  • Works with students as a class, small group, and individually.
  • Assists with coordination, facilitation, and monitoring of teaching activities, including field trips and on-site experiences.
  • Understands and supports the school's mission through professional conduct and actions which demonstrate the core values and philosophy of the organization.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills & Abilities:       

  • Understanding of pedagogy and the best practices of education.
  • Desire to teach school-aged children and ability to adapt to their developmental status.
  • Ability to assist in designing lessons that teach curriculum in an engaging manner, applying various teaching methods such as lectures, discussions, demonstrations, and individual or collaborative projects and research.
  • Supervisory and leadership skills to manage and control the classroom.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a proven ability to maintain professionalism and tact in high-stress situations.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Creative analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

Education & Experience:

  • A High School Diploma
  • A combination of child development education and professional experience working with  children.
  • Experience working with children with a variety of needs and diverse backgrounds.
  • Skill with communicating in a professional manner to staff, families, and the community.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer or standing to teach.
  • Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
  • Must be able to traverse the classroom and adjust one's tone and height, by bending or leaning, in order to teach each child.
