Next Generation Science Standards have brought greater rigor to the science classroom across all grade levels.  These standards require students to have contextual understanding in regards to scientific knowledge, how it's acquired and applied, and how science is connected through a series of concepts.  Essential to teachers providing instruction that delivers on the intent of the Next Generation Science Standards is the district's commitment to providing our staff with ongoing support and professional development in science instruction. These intermediate science instructional leaders will provide support and professional development through modeling, co-teaching, observation and direct contact with our intermediate teachers. The Science Instructional Specialist is primarily responsible for effective teaching and learning of science at the intermediate level following district approved curriculum, instruction and assessment practices. Primary responsibility shall include working in both instructional and leadership roles and providing professional development for classroom teachers.  The Science Instructional Specialist will demonstrate through collaboration with teachers, effective science classroom practices and the ability to provide for student safety with attention to each student's readiness to learn.  Supporting teachers in developing skills in critical areas such as establishing an inquiry rich classroom, delivering a content rich and rigorous curriculum, analysis of student work, differentiating instruction and supporting English learners and students with special needs.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to teachers in planning for instruction in science aligned to district science curriculum;
  • Observe science instruction and planning for instruction through frequent classroom visits, modeling, and co-teaching;
  • Provide specific feedback to teachers based on observed science instruction;
  • Design and facilitate professional development (including job embedded PD) to support the development, implementation, and assessment of curriculum content resulting in improved instruction and increased overall student achievement;
  • Collaborate with teachers to analyze assessment data and use this analysis to adjust instruction;
  • Model a variety of high yield and research-based instructional strategies that promote student learning;
  • Help teachers identify student needs, plan for differentiated instruction, and ensure equitable learning outcomes;
  • Participate in district, building, grade level and department meetings to plan, implement, and evaluate district programming;
  • Lead staff to develop and implement common assessments in science as needed;
  • Connect staff to resources required for successful implementation of the district's science curriculum;
  • Collaborate with mentors of teachers responsible for science instruction who are new to the district;
  • Provide support to teachers in their classrooms through coaching, modeling, and mentoring;
  • Assist teachers in matching appropriate assessment instruments to curriculum objectives;
  • Collaborate with principals on an ongoing basis;
  • Implement appropriate avenues of professional communication, dialogue and feedback to support continual improvement in and assessment of the outcomes of various curricular strategies as they relate to student achievement and school and district goals;
  • Participate in the development, coordination and implementation of district sponsored science-based events;
  • Coordinate and distribute designated district science supplies to support the implementation of the district's science curriculum;
  • Collaborate with other Science Instructional Specialists and the District Science Instructional Coach;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Student Services


Qualifications:

  • Valid Illinois Professional Educator's License (PEL) with Science endorsement;
  • Master's degree with major in science or science related field preferred;
  • Five years of teaching experience with demonstrated success in the area of science preferred;
  • Evidence of involvement in school and district activities involving leadership responsibilities beyond those required in the classroom;
  • In-depth knowledge of district science curriculum & Next Generation Science Standards
  • Knowledge and skills in implementing instructional best practices and strategies necessary to meet the diverse needs of students;
  • Skill and ability to utilize technology to aid instruction, assessment and learning;
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills;
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective organizational relationships and work collaboratively with school and district personnel;
  • Knowledge of adult learning characteristics and effective professional development design;
  • Ability to coordinate and facilitate professional development experiences for staff at the individual, team, building and district levels;
  • Evidence of continuous professional learning and a commitment to participate in professional growth opportunities.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.


Working Conditions:
Full-time (1.0 FTE), 10-month teaching position (School Year, plus 8 additional days) starting August 2026 through early June 2027. 

FLSA Status: Exempt
