Job Title: School Police Officer (Indiana – Level 1 Police Department)
Reports To: Chief of Police
Employment and FLSA Status: Classified/Non-Exempt/Hourly
Position Overview
The School Police Officer is a sworn Indiana law enforcement officer employed by the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation and commissioned through the Greenfield-Central Police Department (GCPD), a certified Tier 1 school police agency.
Officers operate under the authority and policies of GCPD while working collaboratively with school leadership to maintain a safe, secure, and supportive educational environment. This position performs full law enforcement duties, emergency response, student support, crime prevention, and safety planning consistent with Indiana Code (IC) 20-26-18.2 and all other applicable state laws governing school police officers.
1. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Law Enforcement and School Safety
- Provide a visible, professional law enforcement presence on assigned campuses.
- Enforce Indiana state laws, local ordinances, and applicable school district regulations.
- Respond to emergencies, threats, disturbances, and criminal activity on school property.
- Conduct criminal and administrative investigations, including incidents involving theft, fights, weapons, drugs, threats, and bullying.
- Assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of school safety plans, Behavioral Threat Assessment and Management, and emergency response procedures.
- Support and participate in required safety drills and preparedness activities.
Student Support and Relationship Building
- Establish positive relationships with students, families, and school staff.
- Serve as a resource and mentor to students while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
- Identify students who may be at risk and collaborate with school personnel on early interventions.
- Maintain an approachable, student-centered presence that supports trust and open communication.
Collaboration with School Personnel
- Work closely with administrators, counselors, the School Safety Specialist, and other district staff to address safety concerns.
- Participate in Threat Assessment Teams as required by IC 20-26-18.2-5.
- Provide expert input on physical security, emergency operations, and safety improvements.
Coordinate with local law enforcement and public safety agencies when necessary.
Education and Prevention Programs
- When needed, deliver age-appropriate presentations on topics such as substance abuse awareness, vaping laws, digital citizenship, bullying prevention, and conflict resolution.
- Support restorative practices and diversion strategies that align with district philosophy and Indiana juvenile justice principles.
Promote proactive safety initiatives and violence-prevention strategies.
Reporting and Documentation
- Prepare accurate, objective, and timely reports and records in accordance with GCPD standards.
- Maintain required documentation, evidence, and case files.
- Serve as a communication link among GCPD, the school administration, and external agencies as appropriate.
2. Qualifications
Required
- Certified Tier 1 Indiana law enforcement officer, or the ability to obtain certification.
- Minimum of two years of sworn law enforcement experience - US Military, SOF, and federal experience accepted and counts toward the two-year requirement.
- Completion of Indiana School Resource Officer training (IC 20-26-18.2-1) or able to complete within the required timeline.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and other applicable laws.
- Valid Indiana driver's license.
- Drug-free and willing to participate in random drug testing.
Preferred
- Previous experience in school-based policing or youth-focused law enforcement.
- Training in de-escalation, trauma-informed practices, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) skills, or restorative practices.
- Knowledge of Indiana school discipline laws, juvenile processes, and school safety regulations.
- A bachelors degree in a related field.
- Bilingual or multilingual abilities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, run, climb, and physically intervene when required.
- Ability to lift, move, or assist individuals during emergencies.
- Ability to work outdoors in all Indiana weather conditions if needed.
- Ability to score 85% or higher on the 9mm pistol qualification course or department equivalent.
3. Schedule, Work-Life Balance and Work Environment
Schedule and Work-Life Balance
- This position follows a primarily Monday–Friday daytime schedule aligned with the school calendar. Officers are assigned for 184 working days per year and are not required to work during scheduled school breaks, offering a predictable schedule and significant time off compared to traditional law enforcement assignments.
- Occasional evenings, weekends, or district events may be required, but the role is intentionally designed to support long-term sustainability, family time, and officer wellness.
Work Environment
- Assigned to one or more schools in the Greenfield-Central Community School Corporation, with a current assignment in a high school setting.
- May require work during evenings, weekends, or district events as needed.
- May involve collaboration with local police, fire, EMS, and the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
