Reports To: School Principal
PURPOSE: The Middle School Assistant Principal is an instructional leader, responsible for supporting the district and Principal's instructional vision. The Assistant Principal will actively support efforts to improve student achievement, monitor and supervise instruction, and support teachers in improving their instructional practice. They will contribute to the creation of a community of continuous learning for all staff and students; and fostering a culture of high expectations for all students.
EMPLOYMENT QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- Master's degree in Educational Administration or the equivalent from an accredited college or university.
- Appropriate Kansas Certification for Building Leadership.
- Such alternatives to the above as the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable.
Experience:
3 years of experience in the field of education, including successful teaching and/or experience at the secondary level.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with students, school personnel, parents, vendors, peers, and other stakeholders.
- Ability to manage systemic change and successfully implement reform initiatives that produce significant gains in closing the achievement gap.
- Knowledge of PLCs, KESA, and MTSS
- Knowledge of effective behavior management techniques such as PBIS, RTI, Chronic Absenteeism, Zones etc.
- Demonstrated knowledge of research-based instructional strategies and models for improving instructional practices that meet the needs of diverse students and staff at various levels.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the use of data to assess student progress and inform instructional practice.
- Effective interpersonal skills in managing and interacting with diverse groups of stakeholders.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to understand and be sensitive to those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
- Demonstrated ability to manage conflict through quality decision-making and effective problem solving.
- Demonstrated proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software. Must be able to use District IT systems to perform routine tasks, such as performance management assessments, accessing financial reports and managing school staffing and budget information.
- Ability to handle intense or controversial situations with levity and humor.
- Possess strong knowledge of curriculum and instruction.
- Evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness.
- Understand tiered support with emphasis on the MTSS process in academics and behavior/social emotional.
- Understanding the use of data and goal setting to drive school improvement.
- Coordinate building functions.
- Implement policy and procedures.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Effectively manage a community school that may include after-school programs, enrichment and tutoring programs.
- Promote highly effective instruction through effective communication within the district's comprehensive system for professional growth and evaluation.
- Design and implement programming for Title 1 (for Title schools only), assisting with programming for ESL students, etc.
- Develop a school class schedule that provides the greatest opportunities for students and effectively utilizes the talents of staff.
- Understand and communicate Kansas's academic standards and implement standards based curriculum.
- Assist teachers in developing and maintaining appropriate and effective teaching methods.
- Analyze and understand data and effectively use it to form actions within school.
- Assist in the orientation of new staff members to the teaching environment at the middle school, especially as it relates to the area of students, personnel policy and procedures and general building practices.
- Assist in the promotion of positive school climate and staff morale through recognition programs and honor those who excel.
- Act in a supportive role with the principal in work with parents, teachers, and the community to promote the effective flow of communications and ensure positive relations with parents, business leaders and community members.
- Listen and respond to parent concerns with sensitivity. Conduct parent and student meetings and attend after-school activities.
- Assist in organizing parent conferences, back-to-school nights and other times when staff is available to parents to discuss their child's learning and behavior.
- Provide oversight of school wide student management systems and provide responsive interventions to address individual student behavior incidents.
- Maintain accurate student attendance records and strive to promote good student attendance.
- Assist with student orientation; counseling; discipline; due process; data gathering; student recognition and securing student services with outside agencies. Cooperate with the School Resource Officer (SRO), the juvenile court system, and social service agencies.
- Collaborate with administrative leadership team district-wide, initiate a strong sense of team and serve on committees as appropriate.
- Collaborate with the Human Resources Director in recruiting highly qualified job applicants and make recommendations for hire.
- Work with teachers and students to promote building maintenance and cleanliness. Assist in supervision of custodial staff; creating and implementing safety and crisis response plans; maintaining facility and equipment.
- Develop and foster community connections that will enhance the educational experience of all students.
- Plan and implement appropriate professional development as it relates to the district's strategic action plan (DSAP).
- Schedule and organize student activities and state testing.
- Evaluate classified and licensed employees according to best practices and district policy and procedure.
- Attend educational support meetings, including individualized education plan (IEP) meetings, and school board meetings as directed.
- Collaborate with the Human Resources Director to resolve grievances and other employee relations issues.
- Handle employee discipline matters in cooperation with the Human Resources Director in compliance with district policy and negotiated agreements.
- Report issues to authorities as necessary, child abuse, suspicious activity etc.
- Participate in school, district, region, and state meetings as appropriate.
- Understand Kansas and federal education laws and be able to effectively communicate related accountability systems.
- Effectively manage building level budgets in assigned areas of responsibility.
- Facilitate and lead the implementation of the school improvement plan.
- Identify students that have special needs and understand student referral systems. (SIT, IEP)
- Maintain appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
- Comply with applicable district, state, local and federal laws, rules and regulations.
Other duties assigned as needed.
