Special Education (SPED) Coach – Grades K–12

Position Type: Full-time, Year-Round

Reports to: Assistant Director of Special Education and Compliance

Job Summary

The Special Education (SPED) Coach supports teachers in designing and implementing effective instructional practices for students with disabilities in grades K–12. This position ensures that services are provided in compliance with federal, state, and local laws. The SPED Coach also serves as an Individualized Education Program (IEP) case manager and acts as the Local Education Agency (LEA) representative during IEP meetings. The role includes responsibilities related to Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS), instructional coaching, and professional development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Develop and support implementation of instructional plans that align with IEP goals, academic standards, and schoolwide curriculum. Serve as case manager for assigned students with disabilities. Ensure IEPs are developed, reviewed, and implemented in compliance with legal timelines and content requirements. Lead IEP meetings as the LEA representative, ensuring that student needs are prioritized and legal compliance is maintained. For students aged 16 and older (or earlier if required), ensure transition plans include measurable postsecondary goals and services related to education/training, employment, and independent living. Coordinate transition planning with students, families, and relevant agencies. Complete Summary of Performance documents for students exiting special education services. Establish strong, culturally responsive partnerships with families and maintain clear, accessible communication to support the IEP process. Design and deliver professional development for staff on instructional strategies, IEP development, and transition planning. Collaborate with principals and teachers to use data to guide instruction and identify evidence-based practices to close achievement gaps. Provide coaching and support for teachers, including classroom observations, instructional modeling, and feedback sessions. Assist with planning and implementation of lessons that incorporate technology and differentiated instruction. Support implementation of MTSS and intervention strategies as directed by the MTSS Program Administrator. Coordinate progress monitoring and data collection to support student learning and intervention planning. Serve as part of the campus leadership team and participate in district and state trainings. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Required:

Current Utah State Special Education Teaching License Minimum of 3 years of classroom teaching experience Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation Knowledge of K–12 standards, curriculum, and assessments Experience with lesson planning, differentiation, and data-driven instruction Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to prioritize tasks and solve problems independently Experience with IEP case management, compliance, and secondary transition planning Familiarity with MTSS frameworks and district-level assessments Preferred:

Master’s degree in education or a related field Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

This position may require travel between school sites. Must be able to remain in a stationary position for extended periods. Must be able to communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues. Must be able to access and use instructional and digital tools with or without accommodation.
