Reading Specialist Coach

DESCRIPTION:
The Reading Specialist Coach will support Academic Support teachers and their students by providing expert guidance and intervention strategies for struggling readers. This role includes early identification of reading difficulties, coaching teachers in effective reading instruction, and delivering targeted support to students not reading at grade level. The ideal candidate will have experience with the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) or New Jersey Tiered System of Supports (NJTSS) to ensure effective, data-driven interventions.
DUTIES WILL INCLUDE:
- Provide expert guidance to Academic Support teachers on evidence-based reading instruction and intervention strategies
- Coach and mentor staff in the implementation of effective literacy practices and instructional techniques
- Model high-quality reading lessons and facilitate professional development to improve school-wide literacy outcomes
- Identify reading difficulties early through comprehensive screening and diagnostic assessments
- Deliver targeted, small-group support to students who are currently performing below grade level
- Develop individualized intervention plans tailored to specific student needs (e.g., phonics, fluency, comprehension) and work in tandem with Academic Support teachers and classroom teachers to implement the plans
- Utilize the NJTSS/MTSS framework to implement data-driven intervention cycles.
- Analyze student performance data to monitor progress, adjust instructional strategies, and ensure the effectiveness of interventions
- Collaborate with school leadership to refine literacy goals and ensure alignment with state and district standards
QUALIFICATIONS:
- NJDOE Reading Specialist Certification required
- Teaching experience (minimum 5 years preferred), preferably in elementary education
- Proven experience with MTSS or NJTSS to deliver Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions
- Demonstrated ability to analyze literacy diagnostic data to drive instructional decision-making and student progress monitoring
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, with a focus on facilitating collegial coaching conversations and parent outreach
- Proficiency in educational technology and meticulous digital record-keeping (e.g., LinkIt!, Genesis, or Google Workspace)
- Proficiency in Spanish to support diverse student populations and facilitate ESL/ELL literacy strategies, preferred but not required
REMUNERATION:
Salary will be in accordance with the current KEA contract.
