QUALIFICATIONS:

 

  • Certification: Valid New Jersey Standard Certificate: Reading Specialist.
  • Instructional Background: NJ Teacher of English and/or Middle School with Subject-Matter Specialization (Grades 5-8).
  • Specialized Training: Certification or extensive documented training in a multisensory structured literacy program (e.g., Orton-Gillingham) is strongly preferred.
  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience, with a proven track record of accelerating growth for adolescent learners 2+ years below grade level.
  • NJTSS Fluency: Comprehensive knowledge of the New Jersey Tiered System of Supports (NJTSS) and the I&RS process.
  • Data & Tech Proficiency: Ability to triangulate data (NJSLA, DIBELS, i-Ready, etc.) and leverage assistive technology (speech-to-text, audio-to-text) to bridge accessibility gaps.

 


RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Deliver high-intensity, research-based structured literacy instruction to small groups daily, targeting significant achievement gaps with a focus on evidence-based practices.
  • Administer and interpret specialized diagnostics to isolate root-cause deficits in decoding, fluency, and morphology, moving beyond surface-level comprehension scores.
  • Adapt literacy interventions for multilingual learners, expertly differentiating between second-language acquisition needs and clinical reading deficits to ensure appropriate placement and support.
  • Partner with content-area teachers to bridge the gap between student ability and grade-level text; provide prerequisite skill-building and strategic scaffolds to ensure access to complex, unit-specific curriculum.
  • Serve as a reading expert for the I&RS team to monitor intervention efficacy and determine appropriate referrals.
  • Integrate assistive technology (speech-to-text, audiobooks) and AI to ensure all students have access to grade-level curriculum.
  • Maintain precise records of student growth; use data triangulation to adjust instructional pacing and methods.
  • Evaluate school-wide literacy data to measure program success and recommend improvements to the Principal and Supervisor of ELA.
  • Engage families with culturally responsive communication regarding student growth and home-based support.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or Supervisor of ELA.
  • Contract Terms:  184 days/year

Salary:      In accordance with the established Morris School District  Salary Guide currently ranging from $64,425 - $115,315
Benefits:  Full-time employees are eligible for medical, prescription, and dental benefits.

Effective September 1, 2011, The New Jersey First Act implemented May 17, 2011, requires all employees of a school district to reside in the state of New Jersey. Employees of the Morris School District hired after the effective date who do not reside in the State of New Jersey at the time of hire have one year from the effective date of employment to relocate their primary residence to New Jersey. Employees of the school district hired prior to the September 1, 2011 effective date of this Act are grandfathered and are not required to relocate to New Jersey.
