TITLE: Transportation Technician
CLASSIFICATION: Classified Hourly Salary Schedule
REPORTS TO: Director of Transportation
SUMMARY: The Transportation Technician provides technical, clerical, operational, and fleet support for district transportation services. This position supports the daily operations of student transportation by assisting with fleet readiness, vehicle usage, documentation, compliance, and operational coordination. The Transportation Technician helps ensure safe, efficient, and compliant transportation services in accordance with district policies and state and federal regulations.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist with vehicle preparation, fleet maintenance coordination, vehicle usage tracking, and operational fleet support to ensure buses and fleet vehicles are available, safe, and service-ready.
2. Process, maintain, and audit transportation-related records, including vehicle records, certifications, inspection documentation, compliance reports, and operational logs in accordance with district and regulatory requirements.
3. Support daily transportation operations by serving as a substitute driver when operationally necessary and assist with vehicle changes, fleet coordination, vendor requests, and communication with transportation vendors.
4. Review transportation documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with district, state, and federal requirements, including safety and regulatory standards.
5. Provide technical and customer service support to transportation staff, school administrators, parents/guardians, and district personnel regarding routes, schedules, policies, and procedures.
6. Respond to inquiries from parents/guardians, school staff, drivers, supervisors, and outside agencies to provide information and assist in resolving transportation-related issues.
7. Assist with data entry, tracking, and reporting related to vehicle mileage, fleet usage, ridership, driver activity, and other transportation metrics.
8. Maintain organized electronic and manual filing systems to support audit readiness, reporting, and records retention requirements, archive, and purge records according to established timelines.
9. Prepare reports, summaries, and supporting documentation related to transportation operations, safety, and compliance as requested.
10.Assist with coordination and documentation for driver training, certifications, background checks, drug and alcohol testing, and required medical or licensing records.
11.Receive, sort, and process incoming mail, forms, and transportation-related documentation.
12.Utilize transportation software, spreadsheets, word processing, email, and other office applications to perform assigned duties efficiently and accurately.
13.Operate standard office equipment, including copiers, scanners, printers, radios, and telephones.
14.Attend meetings, workshops, and trainings to maintain knowledge of transportation systems, safety requirements, and regulatory standards.
15.Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalency required.
EXPERIENCE: Three years of related office or clerical experience is necessary, preferably in transportation, logistics, or a public sector environment.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES:
• Proficiency in data entry, recordkeeping, and Microsoft Office applications, particularly spreadsheets.
• Ability to learn and effectively use district transportation and routing software.
• Knowledge of transportation operations, routing principles, and safety practices is desirable.
• High level of English proficiency for professional communication and accurate documentation.
• Strong organizational skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Ability to review and analyze transportation data for errors or inconsistencies.
• Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with parents, students, and staff.
• Ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, and work independently in a fastpaced environment.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality of sensitive student and personnel information.
• Ability to operate standard office equipment and communication devices.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment with regular interaction with transportation facilities and fleet operations.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Twelve-month year, Classified Hourly Salary Schedule, employee benefits in accordance with Board policies.
EVALUATION: Performance to be evaluated in accordance with Board policy on evaluation of classified staff.
