Primary Purpose:
Provide students with learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Develop or modify curricula and prepare lessons and other instructional materials to match student ability levels. Work in self-contained, team, departmental, or itinerant capacity as assigned. Provide support and training for teachers, staff, and parents to address and manage students with challenging behaviors.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required special education endorsements for assignments (Special Education, Core Subjects, ESL Supplemental)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of special needs of students in assigned area
Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individual Education Plan (IEP) goal setting and implementation
Knowledge of how to adapt curriculum and instruction for special needs
Knowledge of behavior and social skill intervention techniques and methodology
Ability to work with students with pervasive developmental disabilities
Ability to develop and deliver training to adult learners
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience as a special education teacher, in related social work, or in work related to the certified field preferred
Experience working with students including implementing behavior management strategies.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
1. Collaborate with students, parents, and other members of staff to develop IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned.
2. Implement an instructional, therapeutic, or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
3. Conduct assessment of student learning styles. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
4. Present subject matter effectively and according to guidelines established by IEP. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned
5. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers to modify regular curricula as needed and assist special education students in regular classes with assignments.
6. Participate in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional media.
Student Growth and Development
7. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
Classroom Management and Organization
8. Create classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
9. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
10. Plan and assign the work of teacher aide(s) and volunteer(s) and oversee completion.
Instructional and Program Management
11. Collaborate with administrators and teachers to design and develop research based behavioral intervention plans (BIP), provide support to instructional staff in implementing BIPs, and classroom management strategies.
12. Monitor the effectiveness of behavior intervention plans and recommend changes as needed.
13. Conduct functional behavioral assessment (FBA) based on observation of students in school, home, and community environments. Work with school staff and parents in teaching socially acceptable behaviors to students based on individual needs.
14. Participate in admission, review, and dismissal (ARD) committee meetings. Work collaboratively with parents, teachers, and other staff members to ensure success in meeting individual educational plan (IEP) goals.
15. Manage student behavior and administer discipline including intervening in crisis situations and physically restraining students as necessary according to IEP.
16. Assist teachers with lesson planning, lesson modeling, classroom management, and behavior management.
17. Develop and maintain effective behavioral management and intervention techniques with individual and/or groups of students and provide assistance in meeting educations, occupational, and personal needs.
18. Participate in the Response to Intervention (RtI) process and Early Intervention Team (EIT) meetings to address academic and behavioral issues with identified students.
19. Conference with parents, administrators, and teachers concerning school and student issues.
Training and Staff Development
20. Identify staff development needs, develop and present training, and coach campus personnel to continually develop and enhance behavioral assessment and intervention skills.
21. Provide behavior management training for parents as needed.
Professional Growth and Development
22. Pursue continuous improvement and growth in knowledge of behavior intervention strategies, methodologies, and analysis.
Other
23. Consult with district and outside resources regarding education, social, medical, and personal needs of students.
24. May serve on campus behavioral threat assessment and safe and supportive schools team.
25. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
26. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
27. Maintain professional relationships with parents, students, and colleagues.
28. Participate in staff development activities to improve job-related skills.
29. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
30. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
31. Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, statistical data, and other documents required.
32. Keep informed of and comply with federal, state, district, and school regulations and policies for special education.
33. Perform other duties as assigned by the campus Principal, Director of Special Education, Chief of Staff, and the Superintendent of Schools.

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may require occasional heavy lifting (45 pounds or more) and positioning of students with physical disabilities, control behavior through physical restraint, assist non-ambulatory students, and lift and move adaptive and other classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside; may work outside; regular exposure to noise; exposure to biological hazards
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; may work prolonged or irregular hours
