Position: Coordinator – Special Education
Supervisor:Director of Special Education Department
Work Site:Central Consolidated Administration Complex

 

Summary:The Special Education Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the provision of appropriate educational programs and services to qualifying students within the parameters of the Federal law, New Mexico law, Public Education Department, and CCSD Board Policy.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Provides consultation on child-specific issues to CCSD staff as needed.
  • Attend high need IEP meetings as requested by school staff/admin.
  • Advises CCSD and community sites serving early childhood children with disabilities in the provision of appropriate physical settings and resource materials for special education instructional and related services.
  • Assists and supports staff with child find, eligibility, IEP and other special education procedures.
  • Serve as a district representative for manifestation determination meetings to ensure compliance with federal, state, and CCSD policies and procedures.
  • Works collaboratively with assigned schools, programs and services on systemic level change initiatives.
  • Assists and supports staff with the required interventions/accommodations in the general education setting
  • Assists and supports staff with instructional strategies and environmental conditions to promote student achievement
  • Works with staff to promote meaningful communication/participation and fosters active parent involvement.
  • Coordinates the Extended School Year Services in conjunction with the Director of Special Education.
  • Coordinate alternative placement and settings within the district.
  • Understand and follow regulations in regards to IEP requirements
  • Provide support and guidance to the school LEAs on special education forms and reports.
  • Assist in special education curriculum review, training, and implementation.
  • Use appropriate data to train staff on IEP writing, decision making, progress monitoring, changes in policy or procedures, etc. to ensure compliance with federal, state, and CCSD policy and procedures.
  • work directly with building administrators, teachers, and staff  to ensure compliance with implementation and data collection of special education services including but not limited to behavior intervention plan, individual health plan, individual health plan, etc.
  • Assists and supports schools with monitoring compliance, investigating issues, and recommending solutions regarding IEPs, BIPs, service provision, other special education meetings, application of accommodations, compliance with district policies and state and federal law, and other issues that arise.
  • Demonstrates effective management of performance responsibilities in a timely, organized manner.
  • Demonstrates effective communication and collaboration skills with parents, students, other professionals, and service providers.
  • Advises and assists the district in compliance with federal and state laws, statutes and rules and responding to special education compliance issues.
  • Assists district in identifying and responding to professional development needs related to special education issues, specifically related to the assigned special education services for instructions and related services.
  • Assists district in ensuring the availability of a full continuum of special education services.
  • Assists in assigning instructional and related services staff to site based on allocations.
  • Actively monitors state compliance indicators and performance indicators as assigned.
  • Assists district in the coordination of specialized transportation as needed.
  • Assists district in monitoring caseloads, IEP goals, progress monitoring, and progress reporting.
  • Assists district in addressing special education issues that are otherwise unspecified.
  • Assists the Special Education Director in the management of special education services within the assigned areas to ensure compliance with state statutes, Board policies, administrative rules, directives, and organizational practices and procedures.
  • Coordinates transition for families and children from Part C to Part B special education services within the guidelines specified by the State and Federal Laws.
  • Establish and maintain positive collaborative relationships with public and private service agencies designed to assist families of special needs students at all levels.
  • Ensure all IEP's and Evaluations are in compliance with district, state, and federal regulations.
  • Assist in preparing program applications and administer grants from all other agencies pertaining to Special Education processes, programs and materials, including the Extended School Year (ESY).
  • Ensures maintenance and accuracy of confidential records in accordance with Special Education and District procedures.
  • Comply with all Board of Education policies, administrative regulations, Public Education Department guidelines and local, state and federal laws.
  • Perform any other assigned duties as assigned
  • Attendance of after hour meetings as required by administrative role.

 

Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Master's Degree in Special Education or related field
  • NMPED Administrator License
  • NM PED Teaching License Level 2 or 3
  • 3-5 years teaching/related experience; prior work with at-risk children and their families
  • A clear background check.
  • Valid driver license

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
  • Knowledge of special education law and regulations
  • Experience working with children with disabilities
  • Experience working with Native American children preferred
  • Good communication skills and customer service skills

 

Physical/Job Requirements: 

Standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying up to 50 pounds, climbing, bending, reaching, kneeling, driving a vehicle, traveling long distances, writing, typing, word processing, reading, researching information, effective communication skills, supervisory skills.

 

Safety and Health:
