Position: Middle School Teacher - Special Education ASD
Location: John Page Middle School
Pay Rate:  At the appropriate step on the Teachers' Salary Schedule

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or enrollment in an approved teaching preparation program
  • Possess an endorsement in Autism or willing to pursue education to obtain endorsement
  • Additional training and expertise with emotional and pervasive developmental disorders preferred
  • Demonstrated familiarity with the development and use of accommodations, instructional strategies, and assessment procedures for students with disabilities
  • Willingness to be trained in Nonviolent Crisis Intervention techniques
  • Background in child development with special emphasis on language, communication, and cognitive development
  • Understanding of behavioral intervention techniques
  • Ability to plan and implement an Essential Elements based curriculum
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Prior experience working with students with autism preferred
  • With NCI/CPI training, can implement emergency seclusion and restraint procedures
  • Proficiency in Google Suite applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, etc.) and online sourcing tools with functional knowledge of internet use for search platforms
  • Strong interpersonal skills required
  • Ability to withstand the strain of teaching
  • Must be reliable and punctual with excellent work-related attendance record
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable


Responsibilities:

  • Provides effective individualized instruction to address the academic, social, behavioral and physical needs of students with Autism
  • Facilitate student progress toward meeting the Extended Grade Level Standards
  • Provide personal care support to students, as needed
  • Participate in the evaluation of students and development of individual educational plans for students, and delivery of specialized instruction to students with autism spectrum disorder
  • Maintain classroom lesson plans and student records for attendance, performance, and progress on IEP goals and objectives
  • Maintain regular, positive communication with parents, administration, ancillary staff, and general education staff regarding caseload students
  • Participate in a trans-disciplinary service delivery model with related service providers, such as Occupational Therapists, Speech and Language service providers, Physical Therapists, Psychologist, and School Social Workers
  • Provide service and maintain records including Medicaid billing according to compliance standards established for the district, state, and federal rules, regulations, and procedures
  • Provide necessary support, communication, direction, and feedback to assigned paraprofessional staff
  • Work cooperatively with administration, multidisciplinary team, general and special education colleagues, families, and agencies to provide positive behavior support for assigned students
  • Provide assessment and instruction and maintain records to meet quality and compliance standards established for district, state, and federal rules, regulations, and procedures
  • Conduct IEPs, ensure accommodations are complied with, and ensure REED, MET, and IEP timelines are followed
  • Help develop and implement Behavior Intervention Plans
  • Continue professional development through membership in organizations, conference and workshop attendance, and/or university coursework
  • Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, structured classroom
  • Ensure student safety and the safety of others by implementing approved Positive
  • Behavior Support methods and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention strategies when dealing with inappropriate behaviors
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance
  • Such alternatives to the above responsibilities as the administration may find appropriate and acceptable


This position is classified as Exempt
Employment is contingent upon disclosure in accordance with PA-189.
Ability to withstand the strains and successfully manage the responsibilities of the position.
Must demonstrate reliability and punctuality, with a strong record of consistent attendance. Regular and dependable presence during school hours is essential.
