Reporting to the School Principal, the Assistant Principal of Culture supports the school site in his/her leadership of the school's cultural programming, restorative practices, discipline systems and protocol, and school safety systems/structures. While the exact responsibilities of this position may vary based on placement ( i.e. Lower, Middle, High School), the Assistant Principal of Culture works to achieve the priorities of the school through any culture-facing system. The Assistant Principal of Culture works with the School Principal and Dean of Culture to support teacher development, implement systems that promote a safe and BRIGHT school environment, ensure a fully functioning discipline system, establish positive behavior structures, and manage ongoing duty, arrival, and dismissal expectations. The Assistant Principal of Culture will adhere to YACS best practices in order to successfully implement the social emotional curriculum and programming in order to meet all other academic goals defined by the network and the Principal. The Assistant Principal of Culture helps establish culture programming that supports arts-integrated learning activities and experiences designed to fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth that are aligned with the school's mission and vision.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

Discipline and Culture 

  • Supervise the consistent and fair administration and tracking of student conduct and discipline data with Dean of Culture;
  • Establish and continue programming to ensure a safe environment for learning, including ensuring that student conduct is maintained and discipline is enforced fairly and consistently, and updating and implementing the required annual school safety report;
  • Serve as liaison to parents and facilitate parent education and involvement, including reinforcing the need for parents to support the school's policies and practices for student discipline, dress code, homework, and events;
  • Coach teachers on classroom/ behavior management techniques;
  • Support in making formal reports to the board of trustees and charter entity on student conduct, school safety and related matters;
  • Ensure all data points are entered into Jcampus concerning behavior needs;
  • Implement and follow policies and procedures for student dress code, discipline and other policies related to maintaining a positive school culture of learning and achievement;
  • Organize and support in planning of all YPO (YACS Parent Organization) meetings and after school meetings / family events. 
  • Create protocol to be used for school/family events 

Safety Structures and Systems

  • Implement and follow policies and procedures for student dress code, discipline and other policies related to maintaining a positive school culture of learning and achievement;
  • Creating and Implementing arrival, dismissal, and duty procedures for all staff and students
  • Support in staffing for absences or coverage for classrooms/duties. 

Positive Behavior Intervention System (MTSS) 

  • Organize, plan, and create expectations for parent conferences as needed; 
  • Establish protocol for parent communication, behavior tracking, and discipline management 
  • Facilitate parent education and involvement, including reinforcing the need for parents to support the school's policies and practices for student discipline, dress code, homework, and events;
  • Create systems for promotion of social emotional learning and YACS restorative practices 

Communication

  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication with students and their parents, the school leader, and other colleagues. 
  • Create systems and procedures for communication between staff and families.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues, students, parents, and community members. 
  • Use acceptable communication skills to present information accurately and clearly. 
  • Conference with parents to consistently update them on their child's progress.
  • Create and implement Coaching & Professional Improvement Plans as needed based on the Culture Domain on the TAP Rubric or other high quality materials 

Professional Conduct and Other

  • Exhibit professional judgment and responsibility at all times. 
  • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible. 
  • Participate in assigned morning, lunch, and afternoon duties.
  • Follow attendance policy as assigned by the supervisor. 
  • Perform other functions that may be assigned by the Administration and/or supervisor.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required. 
  • Undertake administrative and instructional duties as the principal may assign.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA/BS degree or graduate degree;
  • Experience and demonstrated ability in working with children in a teaching, counseling or other applicable capacity (examples include, but are not limited to involvement with community youth organizations, supervisory roles in the Boy Scouts or Girl Scouts, and mentorships);
  • Demonstrated successful teaching experience (preferred, but not required) 
  • Exhibited leadership in working with professional staff, students, and the community;
  • Agreement with the academic goals and philosophy of the charter school;
  • Commitment to accountability;
  • Demonstrated success in encouraging parental involvement.

To Begin: 

  • Leading, supporting, and owning parent communication in regards to discipline/ classroom culture 
  • Setting up class dojo for all Pk-4 teachers (ensure all teachers are signed up
  • and parents are connected (points BRIGHT values)
  • Establish a protocol for parent communication in regards to middle school behaviors and incentives- identifying a tracking system 
  • Create & implement duty expectations/procedures (arrival, dismissal, lunch, recess)
  • Create & refine tiered behavioral actions & protocol (send out, ISS, OSS, Jcampus)
  • Populate monthly behavior report to share with key stakeholders
  • Provide monthly opportunities to celebrate learners
  • Collaborate with teachers for BIPs & Tier 2
  • Attend SAT & ABIT meetings as necessary
  • Facilitate BRIGHT team (students & staff)
  • Establishing spirit week, dress down days, support with announcements
  • **BIP Review & accountability
  • Handbook review & revision if necessary
  • Establish duty procedures and protocol, create a template/document to encompass all staff duty requirements 
  • Create high quality PD for the Introduction to Culture BOY PD
  • Create a plan for student culture assembly in BOY (first 30 days) 
  • Collaborate with Counseling team around restorative practices
  • Create a culture plan for student shout outs and values
  • Create & refine tiered behavioral actions & protocols
  • Collaborate with APs to refine team compacts
