The Akron Board of Education announces an anticipated opening for a Librarian Media Specialist, I Promise School, Job Code 033, TS 388 (190 Days). Starting Salary Range $48,967.10. A supplemental contract may be issued for two weeks of extended time.  This is a State Teachers Retirement System position.

School Description: This school, grades 1-8, is a partnership between the Akron Public Schools and the LeBron James Family Foundation. Teacher's report from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:  All of the following must be met at time of application except where noted:

  • Masters' in Library Science, Instructional Technology or related field;
  • Ohio Media Specialist certification or teaching licensure;
  • A minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in teaching and/or library services with a strong focus on instruction collaboration;
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate digital tools and information literacy into curriculum

Desired:

  • Experience with various social, cultural, economic student populations;
  • Experience in an urban setting;
  • Ability to communicate effectiverly with administrators, staff, parents, students and community;
  • Willingness and ability to plan and develop new educational initiatives;
  • Commitment to use best practices and research-based curriculum, instruction and assessment

 

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborates with students and other members of the learning community to analyze learning and information needs, to locate and use reources that will meet those needs, and to understand and communicate the information the resources provide;
  • Knowledgeable about current research on teaching and learning and skilled in applying its findings to a variety of situations;
  • Instructs students to access, evaluate, and use information from multiple sources in order to learn, to think, and to create and apply new knowledge;
  • Maintains a current collection, designed to meet the diverse needs of the learning community, which is developed with collaboration from the learning community and with consultation of school library review resources;
  • Curricular leader and a full participant on the instructional team;
  • Updates personal skills and knowledge in order to work effectively with teachers, administrators, and other staff;
  • Works with teachers, administrators and other staff to expand their general understanding of information issues and to provide them with specific opportunities to develop sophisticated skills in information literacy, including the uses of information technology;
  • Works with teachers and others to identify links across student informational needs, curricular content, learning outcomes, and a wide variety of print, non-print, and digital resources;
  • Leads the entire school community in developing policies, practices, and curricula that guide students to become college and career ready;
  • Committed to the process of collaboration, the library media specialist works closely with all teachers in the critical areas of designing authentic learning tasks and assessments while integrating the information and communication abilities required to meet subject matter standards;
  • Provides leadership and expertise in acquiring and evaluating information resources in all formats;
  • Provides leadership and expertise in bringing an awareness of information issues into collaborative relationships with teachers, administrators, students and others;
  • Provides leadership in modeling for students and others strategies for locating, accessing, and evaluating information within and beyond the library media center;
  • Masters sophisticated electronic resources and maintains a constant focus on the nature, quality, and ethical use of information available in these electronic resources and in more traditional tools;
  • Collaborates with members of the learning community to define the policies of the library media program and to guide and direct all activities related to it;
  • Advocates for the library media program and provides the knowledge, vision, and leadership to steer it creatively and energetically in the 21st century;
  • Proficient in the management of staff, budgets, equipment, and facilities, athe library media specialist plans, executes, andevaluates the program to ensure its quality both at a general level and on a day-to-day basis;
  • Provides opportunities for student leadership through activities related to literacy, incorporating the arts into these opportunities;
  • Communicates program goals, statistics, and library programming to Library/Media Services and the building principal; and
  • This positions reports to and is supervised by the Building Principal
