POSITION: Hospital/Homebound Special Education Teacher (K–12)

LOCATION:  Albany High Complex

JOB SUMMARY:
The Hospital/Homebound Special Education Teacher provides individualized instructional services to students with disabilities who are unable to attend school due to medical or psychological conditions. This role ensures continuity of learning by delivering standards-based instruction aligned with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP), collaborating with school staff, families, and medical providers, and supporting students' academic progress during periods of absence.

This position requires flexibility, strong instructional skills, and the ability to work independently across multiple settings, including home, hospital, and virtual environments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field, required;
  2. Valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC) certification in Special Education (P–12), required;
  3. Experience working with students with disabilities across diverse learning needs;
  4. Knowledge of IEP development, implementation, and compliance requirements;
  5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and Board may find appropriate.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

  1. Strong knowledge of special education law, including IDEA and IEP compliance;
  2. Ability to design and deliver individualized, standards-based instruction in non-traditional settings;
  3. Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple student schedules;
  4. Effective communication and collaboration skills with families, medical personnel, and school staff;
  5. Ability to adapt curriculum and instructional strategies to meet diverse student needs;
  6. Proficiency in virtual learning platforms and instructional technology;
  7. Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in sensitive situations.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Provide direct instructional services to eligible hospital/homebound students in accordance with district guidelines and IEP requirements;
  2. Develop and implement individualized lesson plans aligned to Georgia Standards of Excellence (GSE);
  3. Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure continuity of instruction and grading expectations;
  4. Maintain accurate documentation of instructional hours, student progress, and services provided;
  5. Participate in IEP meetings and contribute to progress monitoring and goal development;
  6. Communicate regularly with parents/guardians regarding student progress and instructional updates;
  7. Coordinate with school personnel to facilitate smooth transitions back to the school setting when appropriate;
  8. Utilize a variety of instructional strategies and resources to meet students' academic and social-emotional needs;
  9. Ensure compliance with district policies, state regulations, and federal special education requirements;
  10. Maintain flexibility to adjust schedules and instructional delivery based on student needs and medical conditions;
  11. Demonstrate prompt and regular attendance for scheduled instructional sessions;
  12. Perform other duties as assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to travel between multiple locations, including homes, hospitals, and school sites;
  2. Ability to sit, stand, and engage in instruction for extended periods;
  3. Ability to lift instructional materials and equipment up to 20 pounds;
  4. Ability to navigate varied environments, including residential and medical settings

SALARY RANGE:  Competitive salary and excellent benefits package, in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide
