Reports To: Deputy Superintendent of Operations
Work Year: 12 months
Position Overview
The Director of Buildings and Grounds provide leadership, management, and oversight of all district facilities, including maintenance, custodial services, grounds, safety, and capital improvement projects. This position ensures that all buildings and grounds are safe, functional, and well-maintained, supporting the district's educational mission. The Director supervises facilities of staff, contractors, and related personnel, establishing operational priorities and ensuring compliance with district policies and safety regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Facilities Management
• Oversee daily operations of all district buildings, grounds, and facilities.
• Develop and implement maintenance schedules, preventive maintenance programs, and safety inspections.
• Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and building codes.
• Monitor the condition of facilities, identify maintenance needs, and prioritize repairs.
Staff Supervision and Leadership
• Supervise and evaluate custodial, maintenance, and grounds personnel.
• Provide direction, training, and professional development to ensure high-quality service.
• Assign tasks, monitor performance, and ensure accountability across all facilities of staff.
Operations and Capital Projects
• Plan, coordinate, and oversee renovations, construction, and capital improvement projects.
• Manage contracts with vendors, service providers, and contractors.
• Monitor and manage facilities budgets, including expenditures, purchasing, and resource allocation.
• Implement energy efficiency, sustainability, and cost-saving initiatives across facilities.
Collaboration and Communication
• Collaborate with school administrators, staff, and district leadership to address facilities needs and priorities.
• Serve as the primary liaison for external partners, contractors, and regulatory agencies regarding facilities.
• Develop reports and presentations on facilities of operations, projects, and improvements for leadership and the Board of Education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Strong knowledge of facilities management, building systems, maintenance practices, and safety regulations.
• Leadership and staff supervision skills, including training, evaluation, and performance management.
• Project management and organizational skills for large-scale capital improvements and maintenance projects.
• Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and facilities management software.
• Ability to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and maintain professional relationships.
Education and Experience Requirements
• Bachelor's degree in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
• Minimum of 5–7 years of experience in facilities management, preferably in K–12, higher education, or large institutional settings.
• Demonstrated experience supervising staff and managing multiple facilities projects.
• Knowledge of building codes, safety regulations, and compliance requirements required.
Working Conditions
• Primarily office environment with frequent on-site visits to buildings, mechanical rooms, and grounds.
• Ability to climb ladders, lift moderate loads, and navigate construction or maintenance sites safely.
• Flexibility to respond to after-hours emergencies or urgent facility issues.
Performance Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated annually by the Deputy Superintendent of Operations or Superintendent, in accordance with district policies and administrative procedures.

Compensation & Benefits:
• Salary Range: Regionally competitive, based on experience and qualifications: $133,457 – $180,559

Selection Process:
All applicants must complete a District application to be considered for employment. Applications will be reviewed. Interviews of selected qualified applicants will be conducted, and a qualified candidate will be recommended by the hiring supervisor to the Office of Human Resources. The Superintendent is responsible for making final hiring recommendations to the Proviso Township High Schools Board of Education. Employment is subject to the recommendation of the Superintendent, the approval of the Board of Education and the results of required processes outlined in Board Policy 5:30.
