Job Title: Automotive Technology Instructor (CTE)
Location: Essex County Schools of Technology - Newark Tech, New Jersey
Employment Type: Full-Time | 10-Month Position

Position Purpose
- Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the Automotive Technology Instructor provides comprehensive instruction in automotive systems and repair to high school students. The instructor equips students with the technical skills and knowledge necessary to pursue careers in the automotive industry or continue their education in post-secondary technical programs. Instruction includes both theoretical concepts and hands-on training in diagnostics, maintenance, and repair, while preparing students for industry-recognized certifications and maintaining a safe, professional shop environment.
Qualifications:
• High school diploma or equivalent required. An Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Automotive Technology or a related field is preferred.
• Minimum of 4–5 years of documented, relevant work experience in the automotive repair industry (required for CTE certification eligibility in New Jersey).
• Teaching experience is a plus but not required. Training will be provided for candidates with strong industry backgrounds.
• Must hold or be eligible for a New Jersey Career and Technical Education (CTE) teaching certification in Automotive Technology (Endorsement Code: 4182), including eligibility through the alternate route program.
• Ability to meet certification requirements established by the New Jersey Department of Education.
• ASE Certification (Automotive Service Excellence) preferred.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to teach and relate to high school students effectively.
• Proficiency with automotive diagnostic tools, scan tools, and service information systems.
• Strong knowledge of automotive systems, safety procedures, and industry best practices.
Performance Responsibilities:
• Instructional Duties:
o Develop and implement a curriculum that covers the fundamentals of automotive systems, including engine repair, electrical/electronic systems, brakes, steering and suspension, drivetrain, and heating and air conditioning.
o Deliver engaging lessons that accommodate various learning styles and ensure students achieve competency in automotive diagnostics and repair.
o Instruct students in the use of tools, equipment, and diagnostic software commonly used in the automotive industry, including OBD-II scan tools and interpretation of diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
o Incorporate hands-on lab activities and real-world scenarios to enhance practical skills.
o Introduce students to emerging automotive technologies, including hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) and advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
o Assess student performance through tests, quizzes, assignments, and hands-on projects.
• Program Development and Coordination:
o Collaborate with the CTE department to align the automotive program with industry standards and certification requirements, including those established by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE).
o Participate in the development of course outlines, instructional materials, and lab/shop setups.
o Maintain an updated inventory of tools, equipment, and materials; order supplies as needed.
o Establish and maintain relationships with local automotive businesses and community partners for student internships, job placements, and guest speakers.
• Student Engagement and Support:
o Provide guidance and support to students regarding career pathways, industry certifications, and post-secondary education opportunities.
o Prepare students for ASE student certification exams.
o Encourage student participation in skills competitions and automotive-related events.
o Monitor student progress and provide additional support or tutoring as needed.
• Safety and Compliance:
o Enforce all safety protocols in the classroom and automotive lab/shop settings.
o Ensure compliance with school district policies, state regulations, and industry standards.
o Conduct regular safety inspections of tools, equipment, and lab facilities.
• Professional Development:
o Stay current with automotive industry trends, tools, and technological advancements.
o Attend professional development workshops, seminars, and training as required.
o Maintain any necessary certifications and licenses related to automotive instruction.
Additional Requirements:
Final candidates will be subject to criminal history background check, proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status, and compliance with all requirements of the New Jersey Department of Education.
Additional Duties:
Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Principal and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Terms of Employment:
This is a full-time day position during 10 months of the year. This position is governed by the collective bargaining agreement by and between the Board of Education and the Essex County Vocational Education Association.
Compensation:
2025-2026 contractual rate.

The Essex County Vocational and Technical High Schools are public schools supported by County, State and Federal Funds. There are five such programs operated by the Board of Education for the Vocational Schools in the County of Essex. These include four high schools and one adult center.
