JOB DESCRIPTION         

TITLE: GROUNDSPERSON

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Understands and follows simple, oral and written instructions.

2. Knowledge of tools and materials used in grounds work.

3. Able to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions.                                                                                                   

4. Has valid Illinois "B" classification driver's license with no restrictions and must be insurable with District insurance.

5. Able to lift and move moderate loads (40-60 lbs.) on a regular basis and heavier levels (60-100 lbs.) on a less frequent basis.

6. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with all staff and the public.

7. Communicates effectively.

8. Demonstrates proficient use of English language in written and oral forms.

9. Uses/operates computer equipment related to the position.

POSITION SUMMARY: The grounds person is responsible for maintaining the appearance and safety of grounds areas in the District.  

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Acts as gardener and groundskeeper.  Plants, prunes, fertilizes, transplants, and nurtures flowers, shrubs, trees, bushes, etc.

2. Mows and trims lawns, cuts weeds, rakes leaves and debris, lines athletic fields, shovels snow, operates snow plow and maintains related equipment.

3. Removes snow and debris from walkways, roofs, etc.

4. Prepares athletic fields using field lining equipment, etc.

5. Understands the uses and handling of various types of fertilizers and chemicals and knows correct levels of application, appropriate seasons, and appropriate intervals for fertilizing and watering.

6. Keeps equipment clean, lubricated and maintained.

7. Moves furniture, office supplies and other district materials.

8.   Maintains and repairs playground equipment.

9. Possesses knowledge of maintaining and repairing small and large grounds equipment and machinery.

10. Performs light carpentry and repairs damaged outside benches/signs/sheds.  Repairs vandalism and removes graffiti from buildings and grounds.

11. Performs other tasks and responsibilities assigned by the supervisor.

PHYSICAL CONTEXT OF THE JOB:   Ability is needed to safely operate chippers, backhoes, augers, bobcats, mowers, chain saws, weed whips, a variety of hand tools and field lining equipment.  The individual must be able to work outdoors in all weather conditions, climb ladders, crawl through tunnels, operate hydraulic lifts and work on roofs or scaffolds.  Lifting is often required, sometimes heavy.   Driving is required between District facilities and snow plowing is required as needed.  This position also may include prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing.
