TITLE: Grades 9-12 High School Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Iowa Administrative Certificate and Evaluator Approval Certificate
2. A Master's Degree or higher
3. Experience in working with students of this age range
4. Experience as a classroom school teacher or similar teaching experience
5. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
REPORTS TO: Superintendent
JOB GOAL: The principal is the professional advisor to the superintendent in matters of his/her grade levels. The principal is delegated responsibility for the operation and management of his/her grade levels, is empowered with the proper authority to execute the program, and is held accountable for the results. The principal is the educational and administrative leader of the school building and the grade levels specified. Through his/her administrative policies, he/she must develop effective instructional programs that will result in a positive teaching-learning environment. The principal shall make policy recommendations in areas that are of concern to his or her grade levels. In preparing policy recommendations for consideration of the superintendent and Board, the principal should work cooperatively with his/her faculty, students, and community in carrying out all phases of school life.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Knows and consistently adheres to the state legal code and local district policies.
2. Exercises full responsibility for the organization and administration of all activities, personnel, physical facilities, and supplementary services within the assigned building(s) and grade levels.
3. Assists in the selection, assignment, and scheduling of staff members.
4. Recognizes and supports the value of accepting input from building staff.
5. Implements negotiated contracts which have been agreed upon by the Board of Education and the employee unit.
6. Administers the safety and security procedures for the building, equipment, grounds, and transportation.
7. Demonstrates a child-centered philosophy of education and considers the welfare of students a paramount responsibility.
8. Assumes the leadership role in the development of philosophy, teaching strategies, and techniques.
9. Effectively evaluates all assigned staff regularly.
10. Demonstrates knowledge of curriculum; shows balanced concern for all subject matter areas.
11. Assists in creating a favorable atmosphere within the building that is conducive to optimum growth and learning.
12. Works with the staff in designing and providing effective professional learning.
13. Maintains professional growth through workshops, seminars, conferences, and personal reading.
14. Establishes and administers rules and regulations pertaining to the welfare of students.
15. Maintains accurate records and prepares reports.
16. Works with the Activities Director to coordinate the Junior High and Senior High School Activity Program
17. Supervises and monitors the development and occurrence of the school year events. (ex, graduation, senior activities, prom, homecoming, etc.)
18. Coordinates the budget development process and makes recommendations for staff and building needs.
19. Assumes responsibility for administering and accounting for all expenditures.
20. Assumes responsibility for the development of a functioning, consistent, and long-term plan of supervision for his/her building(s) and grade levels.
21. Evaluates curriculum programs through testing, observations, and analysis.
22. Provides information to students and parents about school programs and services.
23. Provides opportunity for parents' and residents' involvement in advisory and volunteer groups.
24. Maintains an open line of communication with the staff.
25. Other duties as assigned.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12-month position. Salary to be determined by the Board of Education in consultation with the Superintendent.
EVALUATION: The performance of this job will be evaluated per Board Policy.
