This position is for the 2026-2027 school year to be the Lead Teacher for the Adult Education Program.   This role will have a job in teaching and some administrative duties co-guiding the program in coordination with the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.    This job may be full-time and or part-time dependent on the applicants.   Teacher must be certified in one of the core areas of Math, Social Studies, English, and or Science.

SUMMARY
The Adult Education Lead Teacher develops supportive relationships with adult learners, defines clear learning outcomes, and serves as the primary instructional guide and administrative coordinator for the Adult Education program. They provide direct instruction while overseeing day-to-day operations, including student intake, retention efforts, and data management to support compliance with state MAERS requirements. In a non-evaluative capacity, they mentor instructional staff and communicate regularly with students, peers, administrators, state partners (Region 9, LEO, MACAE), and district personnel.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
The Teacher reports to the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Must have regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
  2. Provide direct instruction for adult education courses, teaching District-approved curriculum tailored to adult learners (e.g., GED/HiSET preparation, Adult Basic Education, ESL).
  3. Oversee the administrative aspects of running the day-to-day operations of the Adult Education program (excluding personnel evaluations and formal disciplinary actions).
  4. Actively facilitate learning by fostering a highly welcoming environment, conducting regular student check-ins, and proactively identifying and assisting students who are struggling with course material or instructions.
  5. Manage the student intake and start-up process, including emailing prospective and returning students, preparing sign-in/attendance tracking sheets, and communicating start dates.
  6. Administer pre- and post-tests using TABE 13/14 (Locator, Level M, or D); assign classes based on test scores and conduct post-testing after 40 hours of attendance to measure academic growth.
  7. Collaborate with students to complete state-required planned programs, set individualized graduation goals, calculate course pacing, and regularly update these plans as credits are earned.
  8. Set up and manage operational spreadsheets for grades, credits, testing, and registration; share accurate end-of-year grades and essential data with the administrative assistant for transcript updates and state reporting.
  9. Track student progress and attendance across platforms; print online learning reports (e.g., Edmentum) and collect offline homework records to ensure accurate MAERS attendance data.
  10. Execute robust student retention strategies by contacting absent students bi-weekly via phone or email to encourage attendance and program completion.
  11. Revise courses as needed and enhance online learning by adding supplementary written assignments and projects.
  12. Attend and represent the district at required regional and state meetings (e.g., Region 9, LEO, MACAE).
  13. Maintain a positive program culture by updating physical and digital student achievement boards, coordinating graduation awards, and celebrating student milestones.
  14. Assist students with post-secondary transitions, including resume writing, job applications, and collecting employment or college/trade school data for required quarterly MAERS follow-up.
  15. Manage standard classroom climate to support adult students' focus on learning; refer any formal disciplinary decisions or escalations to the appropriate building or district administrator.
  16. Judge the relative success of instruction in terms of demonstrated student learning; adjust activities according to evidence.
  17. Serve as a peer leader, providing non-evaluative mentoring, support, and administrative guidance to other teachers and paraprofessionals within the program.
  18. Participate collaboratively with peers and administrators in planning and evaluating the instructional program of the building (not personnel) to assure equitable learning opportunities.
  19. Represent the Adrian Public Schools in an affirmative manner in the community.
  20. Other responsibilities as may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises classroom, students, and volunteers. Provides non-evaluative mentoring and day-to-day administrative guidance to Adult Education staff. Does not conduct formal personnel evaluations or administer formal staff or student disciplinary decisions.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  1. Bachelors degree (Master's degree or leadership experience preferred).
  2. Valid Michigan teaching certificate.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.  Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; skill in oral and written communication.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board of Education policies.
