Teacher Aide – Special Education Support (Paraprofessional)
Job Summary:
Under the direction of a certified teacher and/or building administrator, the paraprofessional aide supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development of students with special needs. This position plays a vital role in helping to provide a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Provide one-on-one or small group support to students with disabilities as outlined in the Individualized Education Program (IEP).
- Assist students with academic tasks, including reading, writing, math, and classroom assignments.
- Support students with behavioral and social-emotional needs using positive behavior support strategies.
- Supervise and support students during non-instructional activities such as lunch, recess, transitions, and transportation.
- Aid students in developing independence in personal care, daily living skills, and organization.
- Maintain a safe and orderly learning environment by following safety protocols and supporting classroom management plans.
- Collaborate and communicate effectively with teachers, therapists, case managers, and other school staff.
- Assist with documentation of student progress and behavior, as requested by the teacher or Child Study Team.
- Attend training and professional development sessions related to supporting students with special needs.
- Maintain confidentiality in accordance with district policies and federal/state regulations.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; some college or Associate's degree preferred.
- Experience working with children, especially those with special needs, is highly desirable.
- Ability to remain patient, flexible, and calm in a fast-paced school environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must meet NJDOE paraprofessional certification requirements (e.g., Praxis ParaPro test or 60 college credits required by district).
Salary: Following the established BTEA salary guide, the minimum starting salary range of Aides Step 1 through Aides 90 CEU Step 1 is $31,805 - $32,255..
