Job Summary
The Middle School Head Coach is responsible for leading, organizing, and developing a positive and competitive middle school athletic program. This role focuses on teaching fundamental skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and character while creating a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment for student-athletes. The Head Coach works closely with the Athletic Director, school administration, staff, students, and families to support the overall mission of the school.
Key Responsibilities:
- Practice & Skill Management: Plan and lead daily practices, focusing on proper technique for stunts, tumbling, jumps, and cheer choreography.
- Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety guidelines, including NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations) regulations and injury prevention protocols.
- Game Day & Event Supervision: Oversee performances at football/basketball games, pep rallies, and community events to promote school spirit.
- Competition Management: Plan and execute routines for cheer competitions, including music selection and choreography.
- Team Selection & Administration: Organize and conduct tryouts, manage the team budget, coordinate fundraising, and arrange transportation for events.
- Student Mentorship: Monitor academic progress and behavior of athletes, fostering a positive, disciplined, and inclusive team culture.
- Communication: Serve as the primary contact for parents, school administration, and athletic directors regarding scheduling, safety, and team policies
- Player Evaluation and Development: Support head coach in assessing players' progress, tracking performance statistics, and providing individualized feedback to help players improve their skills and reach their full potential.
- Compliance and Safety: Ensuring adherence to all relevant rules, regulations, and safety protocols established by the governing bodies and the organization. Promoting a safe and inclusive environment for all team members.
Qualifications and Skills:
- Previous experience coaching or cheerleading at the high school or collegiate level.
- Certifications in CPR/First Aid and NFHS coaching requirements.
- Strong knowledge of stunting, safety rules, and choreography.
Mentorship & Culture
- Academic Monitoring: Track the academic progress and eligibility of team members, emphasizing that they are "students first".
- Team Culture: Foster a disciplined, inclusive environment that promotes sportsmanship and team unity.
- Staff Supervision: Direct and mentor assistant or junior varsity coaches to ensure a consistent pipeline of athlete development.
Working Conditions
- Practices and games occur after school hours and may include evenings and occasional weekends
- Work is performed indoors and/or outdoors, depending on the sport and season
- Physical activity is required, including standing, walking, running, and demonstrating skills
- Exposure to varying weather conditions for outdoor sports
- Seasonal position aligned with the athletic calendar
