Job Title:   Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT)/ Licensed Dyslexia Therapist (LDT)
Exemption Status/Test: Exempt/Professional

Primary Purpose:

The position involves providing structured literacy intervention and academic therapy services to
students with dyslexia and related language-based learning differences. The CALT/LDT will implement evidence-based interventions, conduct screenings, collaborate with school staff, and support student progress through high-fdelity, individualized instruction aligned to the Texas Dyslexia Handbook and IDEA/504 frameworks.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:
Master's degree in education, special education, or related field
Certified Academic Language Therapist (CALT) credential from ALTA or equivalent
Licensed Dyslexia Therapist (LDT) credential issued by the Texas Department of Licensing and
Regulation (TDLR) preferred
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for assignment
 
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Deep understanding of structured literacy, multisensory instruction, and dyslexia intervention (Take Flight, Build, Rite Flight, Jet) 
Knowledge of the Texas Dyslexia Handbook and state/federal dyslexia mandates
Experience developing and delivering individualized intervention plans, individualized education
plans, and PLAAFP statements
Strong collaboration, documentation, and progress monitoring skills
 
Knowledge of reading, writing, and spelling instructional strategies
Knowledge of the Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Ability to analyze, interpret, and use student data to assess students for dyslexia
Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
 
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years providing (Take Flight) structured literacy intervention to students with dyslexia
Experience in school settings preferred

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Strategies

1.       Deliver individualized or small-group academic language therapy using an approved structured literacy program (e.g., Take Flight, Build, Rite Flight, Jet, etc.)
2.       Maintain fidelity to curriculum scope, sequence, and pacing
3.       Track and document student progress using validated tools
4.       Maintain service logs, goal updates, and required reports in accordance with district/504/SPED timelines
5.       Participate in parent conferences and team meetings to share data recommendations.
6.       Collaborate with general education teachers, special education teams, 504 coordinators, and dyslexia coordinators.
7.       Contribute to the development and monitoring of intervention plans and accommodation recommendations.
8.       Ensure compliance with TEA, IDEA, and Section 504 requirements.
9.       Maintain CALT and LDT credentials
10.   Participate in ongoing professional learning related to literacy, dyslexia, and neurodiverse learner support.
11.   Uphold ALTA Code of Ethics and confidentiality standards.

Classroom Management and Organization

12. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.
13. Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the student handbook.
14. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Other

15. Establish and maintain a professional relationship and open communication with parents, students, colleagues, and community members.
16 . Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required.
17. Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
18  . Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s).

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
