Description

Job Title: English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher | Intervention Specialist
Location: Cardinal Local School District
Reports To: Building Principal or Designee

Summary

The ESL / Intervention Specialist provides targeted instructional support to English Learners (ELs) and
students requiring academic intervention. This position is responsible for delivering specialized instruction
aligned with state standards, collaborating with classroom teachers to ensure access to grade-level content,
and supporting language acquisition and literacy development. The Specialist uses data-driven strategies to
improve student outcomes and close achievement gaps.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

English as a Second Language (ESL):

  • Develop and implement instruction aligned with English Language Proficiency Standards.

  • Assess English Learners’ proficiency levels and monitor progress toward language goals.

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to modify and scaffold instruction for EL students.

  • Provide language development support across reading, writing, listening, and speaking domains.

  • Maintain compliance with federal and state mandates for English Learners (e.g., EL plans,

  • documentation, testing).

  • Communicate with families regarding student progress and available supports.

  • Intervention Services:

  • Identify students in need of academic intervention through data analysis and collaboration with staff.

  • Design and deliver small-group or one-on-one instruction in reading, writing, and/or math.

  • Monitor student progress and adjust instruction based on data and student response.

  • Participate in MTSS/RTI (Multi-Tiered Systems of Support/Response to Intervention) processes.

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to align intervention strategies with classroom

  • instruction.


Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities:

Participate in building-level data teams, professional development, and collaborative planning.
Maintain accurate records, student data, and required reports.
Uphold confidentiality, professional ethics, and district policies.
Engage in ongoing professional learning related to literacy, intervention, and second language
acquisition.

Qualifications:

  • ?Demonstrated knowledge of evidence-based instructional practices for ELs and students with diverse learning needs.

  • Strong data analysis and progress monitoring skills.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills.

?Valid State of Ohio Teaching License (or appropriate state equivalent) in:
  • TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), and/or

  • ?Intervention Specialist – Mild/Moderate Needs (or related area).

Physical Demands
The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 45 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 60 pounds,
and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close and
peripheral vision. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to
handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, and communicate verbally. The employee frequently stands, walks,
and sits, and occasionally climbs, balances, stoops, kneels, crouches, or crawls.
