POSITION INFORMATION
12 month position
8hr. Shift  Mon-Fri (1hr. unpaid lunch)

SALARY:  
Minimum $22.75/hour
In accordance with the current Fairport Central Association of School Support Personnel (FCASSP) Agreement and commensurate with education and experience.

JOB GOAL:
Perform repairs and safety inspections on school bus vehicles of the highest quality of workmanship and observations assuring the maximum safe operation of the vehicles.

Head Mechanic

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE JOB: 
The work involves responsibility for performing skilled work in repair and maintenance of automotive and construction equipment. Under the direct supervision of an Automotive Head Mechanic or other supervisory employee responsible for automotive maintenance, an employee in this class does skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automobiles, trucks, tractors and a wide variety of other construction equipment. The employee receives written and/or oral instructions as to the repair work that needs to be done but exercises independent judgment concerning the methods of repair. Work is reviewed while in progress or after completion. Supervision may be exercised over a small number of Automotive Mechanic Helpers when they are assigned to assist an Automotive Mechanic in repair work. Does related work as required.
 
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:  
  • Repairs and overhauls automobiles, trucks, power shovels, motorcycles, tractors, bulldozers, cement mixers, graders and other equipment.
  • Rebuilds motors, carburetors, batteries, alternators and starters, grinds valves and sets tappets, replaces or repairs main connecting rod bearings, inspects and repairs transmissions, universal joints and differentials, relines and adjusts brakes.
  • Evaluates the condition of the cooling system, locates faults or defects and makes repairs.
  • Removes and installs clutch and pressure plates, replaces worn out front end parts such as ball joints and tie rods, checks for toe-ins, replaces worn brake shoes.
  • Repairs hydraulic systems of construction equipment, does simple ox-acetylene and electric welding and fabrication.
  • Diagnosis and repair of automotive emission systems and computerized ignition controls for both distributor and non-distributor equipped vehicles.
  • Greases all moving parts, changes oil and replaces oil filters; checks power steering fluid, replaces or repairs fan belts.
  • Repairs generators, starters, lights and ignitions, adjusts steering mechanisms.
  • Changes tires, balances and rotates tires, repairs flat tires, does some minor body repair.
  • Performs emergency road service to equipment outside the garage.
  • Performs skilled work in the repair and maintenance of small gas and diesel engines and such equipment as snow blowers and lawn mowers.
  • Maintains simple written work orders to record the vehicle number, repairs that are done, parts that are used and part numbers.
  • Must be willing to be a Sub Bus Driver as needed. 
 
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: 
  • Good knowledge of the methods, materials tools and standard practices of the Automotive Mechanic trade.
  • Good knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.\Working knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a wide variety of public works equipment such as draglines, bulldozers, backhoes and similar machinery.
  • Working knowledge of the principles of gasoline and diesel fueled internal combustion engines.
  • Working knowledge of the principles and repair procedures of wheel alignment, suspension systems, and braking systems.
  • Working knowledge of automotive electrical systems including voltage, amps, ohms and circuits.
  • Skill in the use of tools, machines and testing equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose troubles in automotive and other mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to read and understand a wiring diagram.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instruction and follow automotive diagrams.
  • Ability to maintain simple written records.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
  • Acts as a substitute bus driver when all efforts to attain a regular driver fails.
  • Carries out all assigned duties with a positive attitude maintaining a good working relationship with fellow workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from high school or possession of an equivalency diploma, plus EITHER:
  • (A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with an Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Automotive Mechanics, Automotive Technology, Apprentice Training-Automotive, Automotive and Diesel Technology, Automotive/Diesel and Industrial Technology, or a closely related field; OR,
  • (B) Possession of a Certificate from a technical institute, or regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university in one of the fields mentioned in (A) above; OR,
  • (C) Two (2) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as a journeyman-level* automotive mechanic; OR,
  • (D) Five (5) years paid full-time or its part-time equivalent experience as an automotive mechanic or heavy equipment mechanic under the supervision of a journeyman-level mechanic; OR,
  • (E) An equivalent combination of education and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B), (C) and (D) above.
 *Journeyman-level experience refers to skilled mechanical work which involves maintenance, repair, and rebuilding of all systems: brakes, suspension, cooling, exhaust, electrical, transmission, and engine of vehicle equipment. Where education is below the minimum     specified, additional experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
  • Must meet all State and Federal pre-employment requirements of the position prior to employment including the appropriate driver’s license for the vehicle being operated.  Will provide training if needed for CDL.
  • It is the jurisdictions responsibility for ensuring the employees possess valid licenses appropriate to the type of vehicle(s) being operated.
