THE SCHOOL BOARD OF HIGHLANDS COUNTY
POSITION TITLE: Mechanic
ASSIGNMENT: Mechanic 4 - Transportation
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: |
- A high school diploma or equivalent or trade school certificate
- Two (2) years documented experience in the particular trade or craft
- A valid Florida Commercial Driver's License or agrees to obtain within ninety (90) days
- Physical Requirements: Ability to do strenuous physical tasks during the performance of duties, to include lifting up to 100 pounds, crawling, kneeling, bending, stooping, pulling, pushing, etc.
- Satisfactory clearance of a criminal history records check and drug screening
ADDITIONAL DESIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Physical ability to perform tasks that involve the regular and, at times, sustained performance of heavily, physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and materials (75-100 pounds) and occasionally more than 100 pound
- Physical ability to perform skilled coordinated movements that involve moderate manual dexterity and demonstrate a mastery of the particular tools, equipment, materials and techniques of the trade or craft
- Physical ability to perform tasks that require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, odors, and depths as most tasks require visual perception and discrimination, as well as oral communications ability
- Physical ability to perform tasks in an environment that may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, odors, wetness, humidity, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, compressed air sources or toxic agents
- Ability to overhaul, restore, renovate, construct, and/or rebuild equipment, machinery, or objects, requiring adherence to prescribed standards and specifications
- Ability to adhere to all established safety and housekeeping standards, to include regulatory entities and ensures such standards are not violated
- Knowledge of electrical systems, steering systems, hydraulic and air brake systems.
- Knowledge/experience with diesel engines, transmission and differential systems for trucks and buses
- Knowledge/experience with automotive air conditioning systems
- Possess or obtain, within one (1) year of employment, certification as a School Bus Inspector as provided by the Florida Department of Education
PRIMARY PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs school bus safety inspections in accordance to the most current Department of Education Inspection Manual.
- Prepares bus inspection reports, performs bus inspections, and periodic maintenance and repairs. Documents completed repairs and complete work orders
- Handles decisions to remove vehicles from service
- Performs repairs to vehicles as instructed on the work orders by the Garage Manager or Mechanic V
- Reports to the Garage Manager, or Mechanic V, any necessary repairs not listed on the work order
- Performs preventive maintenance according to assigned schedules as needed ( i.e., changing oil, tires, transmission fluid, tune ups, filters and belt replacement)
- Repairs or replaces damaged or missing parts and components ( i.e., mirrors, glass, windshields, windows, doors, wipers)
- Operates various standard automotive mechanics’ tools and specialized testing and diagnostic equipment in performing assigned tasks (i.e., hand tools, laptop/diagnostic tools, torque meters, voltage meters, air tools, grinders and cutters, staple guns, jacks and lifts)
- Performs various testing tasks in ensuring vehicle roadworthiness and to ensure vehicles are prepared according to established route schedules, i.e., checking air systems and valves, tire pressures and conditions, testing electrical pathways
- Performs service and repair on various automotive components and devices ( i.e., mufflers, water hoses, starters, brakes, tires, points, plugs, radiators, cylinders, rotors, horns, wheelchair lifts
- Diagnoses, repairs, and/or replaces electrical/electronic lighting systems, control systems, cooling systems, transmissions, starting and charging systems
- Conducts vehicle road tests to ascertain repair effectiveness and performs final inspection upon completion of service/repair prior to release for use and operation
- Performs cleaning and maintenance of equipment, tools, materials, and vehicles utilized per assigned work order; ensures adherence to principles and practices of safe equipment use and operation
- Plans and organizes daily work routine and establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time-management methodology
- Avoids duplication of effort and efficiently estimates expected time of completion for work elements, and establishes a personal schedule accordingly
- Attends required meetings, planning sessions and discussions without tardiness and implements work activity in accordance with priorities and estimated schedules
- Utilizes computerized diagnostic and manual test methods in identifying services, replacement and vehicle/bus/equipment repair needs
- Maintains a clean, safe working area
- Transports vehicles from one location to another
- Requisitions or orders parts and supplies; assists in maintaining inventories of shop and truck stock items
- Responds to road calls for breakdowns
- Assist with parking and the security of the compound
- Washes and fuels vehicles
- Performs welding when required
- Ability to take online/face-to-face courses to keep up with mechanic industry technological advancements.

Length of contract and number of hours worked are determined by specific allocation as approved annually during planning-budgeting process
APPRAISAL:
Performance will be appraised annually in accordance with School Board Policy
PAY GRADE:
According to the School Board of Highlands County Non-Instructional Salary Schedule
