Position: Safety & Security Coordinator
Pennsauken Public Schools is an urban/suburban Pre-K to 12th grade school district of approximately 5,000 students located in Camden County, New Jersey
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Possession of or ability to obtain the New Jersey School Safety Specialist Certification within a specified timeframe.
- Strong Leadership, organizational and problem-solving skills.
- Knowledge of New Jersey school safety laws, regulations and reporting requirements (e.g., Alyssa’s Law, HIB, MOA with Law Enforcement).
- Ability to handle high-stress situations calmly and effectively.
- Knowledge of New Jersey education laws, regulations, and policies.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and motivational skills are essential, as is the ability to defuse confrontational situations and work with diverse populations.
- Required criminal history background check, physical examination, PPD/drug screening under Board Policy.
- Proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status.
- Proficiency in the use of security technology systems (e.g., surveillance, access control).
- Valid New Jersey Driver’s License.
REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools and Superintendent’s Designee.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: The School Safety & Security Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the safety and security of the district. This role involves developing and implementing safety and security plans, coordinating with law enforcement, and ensuring compliance with state laws and regulat ions. The coordinator provides training to staff, manages security personnel, and serves as a liaison for various agencies and serves as the district’s School Safety Specialist.

Leadership and Supervision:
- Develop, update and implement district-wide safety and security policies, procedures, and protocols in accordance with New Jersey Department of Education (NJDOE) guidelines, including the Uniform State Memorandum Agreement between Education and Law Enforcement Officials
- Oversee the district’s Emergency Operations Plan (EOP) and ensure its continuous review, update, and compliance with all state and federal requirements.
- Review the school policies and procedures relative to school safety and security compliance with Federal and State laws regarding school safety and security to ensure they align.
- Coordinate and document all mandated safety drills (e.g., fire, lockdown, evacuation), ensuring compliance and effective execution with local law enforcement, state agencies, and community organizations.
- Conduct regular safety and security assessments for all school buildings and grounds, identifying potential hazards and recommending improvements.
- Serve as a school entity liaison between the school district and external agencies including law enforcement, emergency services and community organizations on matters of school safety and security.
- Yearly report to Pennsauken School Board on current safety and security practices that identify strategies to improve school safety and security.
- Coordinate a tour of the school buildings and grounds with law enforcement agencies and first responders in order to ensure agencies are familiar and knowledgeable of school district building layouts in preparation for any emergency.

- Oversee the functionality and maintenance of school security technology systems,
- Develop and implement identification procedures for students, staff, and visitors.
- Collaborate with the district’s School Safety Teams and Anti-Bullying Specialists

- Work with school administrators to develop and implement building-level safety

- Provide guidance and training on behavioral management and nonviolent crisis

- Assist in the development and management of the safety and security department
- Stay informed of current trends, best practices, and legislative changes related to
- Ability to de-escalate tense situations and manage conflicts.
Data and Instructional Support:
- Provide ongoing professional development to school staff on safety and security protocols, emergency procedures and crisis management.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive emergency plans, including mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery phases.
- Collect and analyze data related to the safety and security incidents to inform practices and identify areas for improvement.
- Establish and maintain communication protocols for various safety and security situations.
- Coordinate investigations of incidents of theft, vandalism, violence, suspicious behavior, illegal drug activity, security breaches and other safety concerns.
- Oversee the distribution and maintenance of safety equipment and supplies.
- Able to train security personnel.
- Prepare and submit all required reports to the NJDOE and other relevant authorities, including Violence, and Substance Abuse (VVSA) Reports.
- Maintain accurate records of all safety and security –related activities, training and incidents.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Primarily indoor office environment with frequent movement throughout school buildings and grounds.
- Occasional exposure to outdoor weather conditions.
- May be required to respond to emergencies outside of regular school hours.
- Ability to stand, walk, sit and occasionally life up to 50 lbs.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Full Time-12 Months
- $55,000-$70,000 yearly
ANNUAL EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with NJ State law and the provisions of the board’s policy on evaluating certified staff.
