Danbury Public Schools serves a diverse and growing community of over 12,000 learners across PreK–12 programs. We are seeking a highly qualified, innovative, and student-centered instructional leader to serve as Principal of Western Connecticut Academy for International Studies (WCAIS), a magnet elementary school with a global education focus.
WCAIS is an International Studies magnet school serving students in grades K–5. The school embraces an interdisciplinary and globally minded curriculum that nurtures academic excellence, cross-cultural understanding, and social responsibility. Through inquiry-based learning, international awareness, and community engagement, students are empowered to think critically, communicate effectively, and act compassionately in a diverse and interconnected world.
Primary Responsibilities
- Lead the development and implementation of an annual School Improvement Plan that is data-informed, equity-focused, and aligned with district and magnet school goals.
- Advance the vision and mission of the Danbury Portrait of the Graduate, with a focus on inquiry-based, international, and transformational learning experiences.
- Foster a positive, inclusive school culture that supports academic achievement, social-emotional learning, and global citizenship.
- Manage a school-based budget that aligns with strategic priorities and addresses resource needs creatively and efficiently.
- Recruit, hire, and retain a highly effective and diverse staff committed to the school’s international studies theme and academic excellence.
- Supervise, support, and evaluate certified and non-certified staff according to district protocols.
- Collaborate with district leaders to meet the needs of English Language Learners and students with disabilities, ensuring equity in access and achievement.
- Oversee PPT and 504 processes in close partnership with special education and student services staff.
- Promote strong family and community partnerships, leveraging parent involvement and local/global resources to enrich the learning experience.
- Ensure effective management of building operations, student safety, security, and emergency preparedness.
- Maintain compliance with state and federal mandates, including timely and accurate submission of all required reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
- Valid Connecticut Intermediate Administrator (092) Certification required.
- 3–5 years of exemplary administrative experience in an elementary school setting preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership in improving academic outcomes in diverse and multilingual communities.
- Deep knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment practices for elementary grades.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Commitment to high ethical standards, collaborative leadership, and continuous improvement.
- Experience implementing SRBI, supporting multilingual learners, and using assessment data to drive instruction.
- Culturally responsive and equity-minded leadership practices.
This is an 11-month administrative position with a 206-day work year, as defined by the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Danbury School Administrators Association (DSAA) and the Danbury Board of Education.
Salary
The annual salary range is $152,282 to $168,500 based on qualifications and experience, as outlined in the DSAA contract.
