Life Skills Assistant:

Summary
Assists the teacher in general daily classroom activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:  Other duties may be assigned

  • Under supervision of a teacher, assists with set up of classroom and prepares materials for instructional units and/or classroom activities.
  • A minimum of 90% of time must be spent working with students and no more than 10% of time spent on clerical functions.
  • If assigned to interpret for a student/s with hearing impairments, the assistant will fulfill requirements to maintain certification, including attending conferences in which CEUs can be earned.
  • If assigned to interpret for a student/s with hearing impairments, the assistant will follow the schedule developed by the teacher for students with hearing impairments and/or the building principal.
  • Assists students individually or in small groups to reinforce learning of materials or skills initially introduced by the teacher; tutors students at teacher’s request.
  • Collects behavioral or academic data as directed by supervising teacher for ongoing assessment purposes.
  • Assists teacher with supervision of students in the classroom, playgrounds, assemblies, lunch periods, and on field trips.
  • Maintains discipline in the absence of the teacher.
  • Under the supervision of the teacher, implements IEP goals and objectives by assisting in the use and adaptation of a range of instructional and therapy techniques.
  • Operates standard school equipment such as copier, laminator, and AV equipment.
  • Assists with escorting students to and from various rooms and locations.
  • Maintains confidentiality of student records, meetings, and staff discussions and student evaluations.
  • Helps students master instructional equipment or instructional materials assigned by the teacher, including assistive technology equipment.
  • Is responsible for the daily care of each student’s health needs, including tube feeding, catheterization, tracheotomy suctioning.
  • Assists students with bathrooming, including changing diapers.
  • Lifts and transfers students per instructed method.
  • Provides emergency care, Basic First Aid, and CPR for the care of students.
  • Performs job-coaching duties for school/community-based programs that provide realistic working environments for the students.
  • Transports students to community or work experiences.
  • Presents self in a manner that sets forth a role model for students to emulate.
  • Maintains appropriate appearance and regular attendance.
  • Promotes good public relations for the school district and community.
  • Remains free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the corporation.
  • Effectively completes other job duties as assigned

Assists supervising students.
 
Qualification Requirements:

Education and/or Experience: 
High School diploma or general education degree (GED), 60 hours of College Credit, or an Associates Degree or higher, or pass State approved Para Professional Examinations.  Must have basic first aid and CPR training.
 
Language Skills: 
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to complete routine reports. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students.
 
Mathematical Skills: 
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to perform basic math calculations.
 
Reasoning Ability: 
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
 
Other Skills and Abilities: 
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.  Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community.  Ability to operate office equipment.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and school board policies.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and sit.  The employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, as to operate office equipment; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, or crouch.  The employee must frequently lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally is required to lift up to 50 pounds such as boxes of books and paper materials.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
