Description

Job Summary:
The Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET) Instructor is responsible for delivering high-quality law enforcement training in compliance with state regulations. This role requires expertise in law enforcement practices, strong instructional skills, and adherence to CLEET certification requirements. The instructor will ensure that students receive relevant, up-to-date knowledge and practical skills necessary for law enforcement professionals.


Qualifications:
To qualify as a CLEET Instructor, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  1. Law Enforcement Experience:
    • A minimum of two (2) years of full-time law enforcement experience following basic academy certification, OR
    • Five (5) years of combined full-time and reserve law enforcement experience.
    • A written endorsement from the applicant’s agency head or designee is required.
  2. Educational and Instructor Development Requirements:
    • Completion of a CLEET-recognized instructor development school, OR
    • Possession of a secondary education teaching certificate, OR
    • An advanced degree in secondary or adult education, OR
    • Qualification to instruct at an accredited four-year college or university.
  3. Firearms Instructor Training (if applicable):
    • Completion of a firearms instructor school (16 hours or longer) through one of the following organizations:
      • National Rifle Association (NRA)
      • Oklahoma Rifle Association (ORA)
      • CLEET
      • Federal law enforcement agency
      • Other professionally recognized organizations
    • Submission of the instructor school certificate with the CLEET application for SDA instructor certification.


Additional Requirements:
  • Familiarity with the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act.
  • Compliance with mandatory preclusion and other restrictions for SDA license eligibility.
  • Adherence to OAC Rule 390:25-1-10 regarding instructor certification.
  • Maintenance of active peace officer status; instructors inactive for over five years must requalify under adjunct instructor requirements (OAC 390:25-1-13).
  • Submission of all applications and required documentation through the CLEET Online Portal (effective August 15, 2022).


Waiver Provisions:
Applicants seeking a waiver for basic instructor certification must:
  • Meet the law enforcement experience requirement.
  • Have completed an instructor development school that meets or exceeds CLEET standards, subject to review by the CLEET director or designee.


Description of Tasks:
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and instruct various subjects in law enforcement basic academies, as well as advanced and specialized continuing education courses.
  • Develop course outlines and reference materials for various instructional programs.
  • Assist in developing, writing, and modifying curriculum for training programs within the state.
  • Complete additional job-related tasks as assigned by the Program Manager, Assistant Director, or Director.
  • Follows all coordination, safety and facility procedures and guidelines as outlined in MT Law Enforcement Training Center Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)


Knowledge and Skills:
  • Strong understanding of classroom teaching techniques and instructional strategies.
  • Proficiency in utilizing classroom equipment and technology.
  • In-depth knowledge of various aspects of law enforcement training.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills to effectively present information both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with students, colleagues, and law enforcement agencies.


Physical Requirements:
  • Must be in adequate physical condition to safely participate in basic law enforcement training.
  • Ability to kneel, crouch, and move efficiently to avoid unnecessary injury during training exercises.

Reports To: Economic and Workforce Director & Designated Coordinator

Supervises: Supervision of students/clients
