JOB GOALS:
The primary role of the Literacy Supervisor is to mentor and support teaching and learning through modeling, coaching, evaluating and professional development to improve and accelerate student achievement through quality curriculum and instruction. A Literacy Supervisor is a certified, highly qualified teacher who demonstrates leadership skills and has expertise in curriculum, instructional strategies, child development, classroom management and knowledge of adult learning theory.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Standard New Jersey Literacy Teacher certificate
2. Possess a New Jersey Standard Supervisor Certificate
3. Minimum of five (5) years successful experience in the field of public education, including teaching Literacy
4. Demonstrated knowledge of Literacy content standards and curricula (particularly the constructivist approach), effective instructional techniques, staff development, systemic change, performance-based assessment, use of technology in instruction, needs assessment, program evaluation, and specifications of state tests.
5. Exceptional communication, organizational, and research skills
6. Demonstrated ability to organize individuals and groups for the purposes of providing reading support in language arts programs.
7. Demonstrated aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- 1. Facilitates school-level and classroom-level changes in literacy teaching and learning.
2. Develops and coordinates school-wide programs in the areas of literacy.
3. Assists school in supporting student achievement.
4. Works collaboratively with other staff in the school to foster educational research and practice, and in the entire school to foster systemic reform, to address problems of teaching and learning, and to implement the school’s Equity Plan.
5. Prepares analytic reports and staff development materials on curriculum and instruction, using data for program improvement, performance and authentic assessment and current educational research and practice as relates to school/district AYP.
6. Ensures the continuing articulation of the literacy curriculum school-wide, kindergarten through grade 5.
7. Collaborates with administrative team to establish and maintain consistent relationships between the curricula; articulates cross-curricula methods and strategies and provides training, as needed, to improve provided instruction.
8. Researches and implements ‘best practices’ and uses ‘exemplars’ directing staff and administration towards improved literacy instruction and learning.
9. Collaborates with and coordinates regularly scheduled school meetings of literature teachers.
10. Leads curriculum committees in literacy to develop curricula, to assist in implementation, and to design appropriate content standards-based assessments, including performance-based assessments.
11. Assumes responsibility to review district expenditures; ordering, inventorying, and distribution of all materials for district literacy programs, as needed.
12. Assists in obtaining grants and partnerships to enhance instruction for improved student achievement.
13. Identifies technology appropriate to developmental needs and district resources; requires staff to infuse current technology into literacy instruction.
14. Supports and uses technology, as appropriate, for programs development, monitoring, and production of reports.
15. Assists in the recruitment and training of personnel.
16. Participates in informal and formal assessment and evaluation for personnel, as assigned.
17. Implements an ongoing review of reports and documentation required by federal, state, and district regulations; disseminates and incorporates changes, as required.
18. Keeps informed of educational innovations and trends in the area of literacy instruction and curriculum development.
19. Performs other duties as may be assigned, within the context of qualifications and certification.
20. Provide leadership and support for integrating quality reading/language arts skills in all content areas.
21. Provide instruction and motivation to students who are experiencing difficulties with reading and address specific reading/writing needs across the curriculum.
22. Attend meetings and professional development sessions at the district or state level, and bring information and ideas for curriculum revision back to the district teams to share with teachers and assist them in understanding mandates.
23. Assist in focusing professional development activities on appropriate research-based practices.
24. Assist with school-based staff development plans with in-service days and/or summer workshops. Sessions may include demonstrations of classroom strategies, small-group and individual mentoring/peer coaching sessions, assessment of student progress, and data interpretation.
25. Work with the building administrators to ensure that the literacy strategies learned in workshops are used effectively during classroom instruction and reflected when appropriate in student IEPs.
26. Support teachers in using appropriate strategies.
27. Study, evaluate, and recommend new instructional materials, methods, and programs.
28. Review and provide services which conform to state laws, district objectives and board policies.
29. Assume other related responsibilities and duties within the context of the above performance responsibilities.
