Description
The Dean of Students serves as a member of the high school administrative team and assists with the daily operation of the school, specifically in the areas of discipline and attendance. The incumbent also provides leadership and serves as a resource for instructional and systemic equity at the high school level and in alignment with equity work across the district. Other activities and responsibilities may be delegated by the building principal or District Administrator.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Bachelor’s degree with a major in Education is required
Master’s degree in Educational Leadership or closely related field preferred
Wisconsin teaching license required
Administrative license preferred
Training on equity, diversity and culturally responsive pedagogy, as well as a willingness to extend his or her professional development in these areas
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Experience:
General knowledge of restorative justice theory and practice
Demonstrated ability to make independent judgments and decisions
Effective verbal and written communication skills, as demonstrated by sound working relationships with students, parents, administrators, and other teaching colleagues
Ability to perform effectively in an atmosphere of multiple and conflicting demands
Duties and Responsibilities:
Assist in the implementation of policies, regulations, guidelines, and procedures pertaining to student behavior and attendance.
Works with and assists faculty in the development of effective classroom discipline and organization.
Assist in maintaining discipline throughout the student body and participate in disciplinary hearings when applicable.
Address bus behavior referrals and maintain appropriate documentation.
Assist teachers with behavior management plans and strategies.
Serve as an instructional resource for intervention and equity services to support the development and growth of equitable systems and practices within the school.
Serve as a member of the district equity leadership team.
Work with student services staff in providing guidance and motivation for student success and in collaboratively developing plans for students who struggle.
Coordinate and facilitate restorative practices approach to discipline and serve as a liaison with coordinators in other buildings to support a systemic approach.
Communicate with students, parents, and staff in a timely manner regarding student behavior and attendance.
Serve as a key member of PBIS implementation team, make recommendations for advancing implementation of tiers 2 and 3 at the high school and coordinate/lead staff development activities related to PBIS implementation. Serve as a liaison with other building coordinators to ensure systemic approach to PBIS implementation.
Act as a liaison between student departments and institution administrators.
Assists Building Principal with fire, storm and tornado drills on a regular basis and is able to implement emergency evacuations and lock-downs effectively.
Prepares required reports and paperwork such as discipline reports, suspension reports, expulsion paperwork, discrimination complaints, injury reports, parent communications, and other paperwork as assigned.
Other duties and responsibilities:
Maintain a commitment to learning about best practices in student management and attendance.
Attend special meetings to engage in conversations involving student behavior and attendance.
Participate in professional growth to improve skills related to the job assignment.
Meet with parent, faculty, and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
Perform supervision of students during unstructured times such as before and after school, during passing times and during lunch periods. As a member of the high school administrative team, assist with supervision of special events such as athletic contests, homecoming and prom.
Make recommendations concerning the revision and updating of student code of conduct, rules, regulations, and handbooks.
Serve as emergency substitute teacher when need arises.
Perform such record-keeping functions as the principal may direct, including entry of behavior events in the student information system, and producing and sending documentation related to behavior events to families as required by policy or statute.
Perform other related duties as directed by the Principal or District Administrator.
Physical
This is a light job which involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. This job involves sitting, with a need to move about for significant periods of time. Reaching, handling objects and papers and fine manipulation are all performed frequently. Verbal and auditory communication is both frequently involved. Near acuity is frequently utilized. Physical attendance or in-person interaction is required during school days and regular operating hours.
