Director of Instrumental and Choral Music
Speedway High School
Position Summary:The Speedway High School Director of Instrumental and Choral Music is responsible for developing, coordinating, and directing the school's instrumental and vocal music programs. The Director will create an inclusive, engaging environment that promotes student growth, musical excellence, and school spirit through performances, competitions, and community engagement.
Key Responsibilities:
Band Duties:
- Direct all band ensembles, including concert band, marching band, pep band, and jazz band.
- Plan and oversee rehearsals, performances, and competitions.
- Organize for school events, concerts, and local parades or festivals.
- Teach instrumental music techniques, music theory, and performance skills.
- Manage inventory of instruments, uniforms, and equipment.
- Organize fundraising and community outreach events.
- Coordinate with Speedway Music Boosters and parent volunteers.
- Prepare students for auditions and solo/ensemble festivals.
- Direct all vocal ensembles, including concert choirs.
- Teach vocal techniques, sight-reading, and choral literature.
- Plan and lead concerts, school events, and choral activities.
- Accompany or coordinate accompaniment for rehearsals and performances.
- Promote student participation in regional and state-level events.
- Collaborate with other Speedway School staff and Speedway High School faculty.
- Create lesson plans aligned with state and national music standards.
- Assess student progress and provide feedback.
- Maintain a positive, supportive classroom environment.
- Attend staff meetings, professional development, and parent-teacher conferences.
- Ensure compliance with school and district policies.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Valid Indiana teaching license with appropriate music endorsement.
- Ability to teach both instrumental and vocal music.
- Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills.
- Ability to inspire students and foster a passion for music.
- Proficiency in at least one instrument and/or piano accompaniment preferred.
- Prior experience working in a school or small ensemble setting is preferred but not required.
Working Conditions:
- Requires evening and weekend availability for rehearsals and performances.
- Involves travel to competitions, festivals, and school events.
- May require physical activity such as marching, lifting instruments, or stage setup.

May 20 – Director of Instrumental and Choral Music
On or before June 9 - Contact candidates selected to be interviewed
June 9 - June 13 - 1st Round Interviews
June 16- June 20 – Possible 2nd Round Interviews
July 8 - Recommendation for employment to Speedway School Board
