Job Summary: Carbon Valley Academy K-8 is searching for a 6-7-8 ELA/Humanities teacher experienced in teaching the grade level standards. The successful candidate will motivate students toward an enthusiasm for literacy and critical thinking. We are looking for a teacher and colleague who understands and appreciates the developmental learning needs and social emotional needs of young adolescents (6-7-8). An ELA/Humanities teacher who is approachable, engaging, organized, sensitive and disciplined will be most successful in this position.
The primary focus will be developing and sustaining a very strong and rewarding student to teacher connection inside and outside the classroom. Our goal is to attract and retain a colleague who engages thoroughly with our learning community and who is eager to participate in the larger life of the school (as team lead, club sponsor, etc.). A sense of humor would also be warmly welcomed. CVA K-8 is a Chromebook 1:1 school that uses technology to support student achievement. You would teach one section (80m) of ELA/Humanities for each grade level (6-7-8). You will also teach an elective 1 trimester on your own, and then co-teach with our math teacher for a different trimester. You would have (1-2) 50 minute planning periods depending on the trimester. You will hav a 40m lunch.
ELA/Humanities Teacher essential responsibilities:
Creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and voicing concerns. A place where student voice is not only permitted but required.
Designing, developing, and delivering quality BACKWARDS planned lessons and instruction and curricula that adhere to national and state standards.
Creating suitable assessments and delivering helpful feedback to students during the learning and sharing the progress with parents and other teachers.
Establishing classroom rules and regulations and ensuring that all students understand what is expected of them.
Open to creating social contracts with students and holding them to what is written.
To assist all students in developing skills in the areas of English/Language arts primarily, but also philosophy and the arts (visual, performance, and media).
Preparing and delivering Quality Learning Experiences via Workshop Model.
Setting up Parent/Teacher conferences twice a year and consistently reaching out to families to ensure they are aware of the progress of their child(ren)..
Providing extra resources, support, and interventions for students who are struggling.
Grading papers, updating records, and handling various administrative tasks in a timely manner.
Participating in after school Community building activities (4 required events a year)
Opportunities to run clubs and/or athletics with middle or elementary students
Interested in collaborating with a team and working hard to fulfill the team mate role
Receptive to receiving coaching on a regular basis with administrators and teacher trainers.
Prepare for classes assigned and show written evidence (lesson plan) of preparation upon request of the administrator.
Maintain a positive, accepting attitude in working with students.
Establish and enforce rules of behavior and procedures to maintain order in the classroom.
Serve as a resource to teachers through coaching, co-teaching, co-planning, modeling best practices in the classrooms.
Other Duties
1. Maintains professional competence by attending all Professional Development Days (1st Monday of each month), weekly PLC meetings, staff meetings and other professional activities.
2. Consistently implementing professional learning within all class instruction and working to strive towards the school vision throughout everything they do.
3. Participates in various student and parent activities which occur in school including night time and possible weekend events, student clubs and after-school activities.
4. Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and activity/learning centers.
5. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator.
Models non discriminatory practices in all activities. (These are intended only as a list of the various types of work performed in this position. Humanities teacher educational requirements:
Bachelor's Degree in English focus and certification to teach (or working towards one).
Social Studies credit or focus preferred but not required
Experience with Workshop Model instruction model
Dedication to instruction of critical thinking and problem-solving with confidence in a collaborative environment.
Has leadership skills and a positive attitude when assisting with decision making.
Demonstrated professionalism and dedication to continuous improvement.
Time management skills.
