JOB SUMMARY:
The Accounting Specialist supports the Chief Financial Officer by managing complex fiscal and administrative functions within the Finance Department. This role ensures accurate accounting, budget monitoring, grant management, financial reporting, and compliance with district policies and regulations. The position plays a critical role in maintaining financial integrity, supporting strategic initiatives, and ensuring efficient use of district resources.

This role ensures accurate accounting, budget monitoring, grant management, financial reporting, and compliance with district policies and regulations. The position plays a critical role in maintaining financial integrity, supporting strategic initiatives, and ensuring efficient use of district resources.
POSITION: Twelve (12) month
SALARY: $71,276 - $93,729
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Five (5) years of experience in accounting or finance related field (e.g., accounting, accounts examining, budget management, grant administration, or purchasing).
- College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of budget preparation, control, and financial reporting
- Knowledge of bookkeeping and basic accounting principles
- Familiarity with human resources, payroll, purchasing, and contract processes
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Strong oral and written communication abilities
- Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills
- High-level skill in arithmetic computations and financial analysis
- Ability to review and reconcile financial documents accurately
- Ability to understand and apply relevant laws, statutes, and regulations
- Proficiency in Skyward or similar financial management systems
- Ability to manage grants and meet documentation requirements
- Ability to project, forecast, and monitor budgets and expenditures
- Skill in preparing balance sheets, financial statements, and audits
- Ability to develop and maintain internal control procedures
- Capacity to work effectively with individuals from diverse background
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain accurate accounting of funds across cost centers, functions, and projects following accepted accounting principles.
- Keep complete, detailed accounting records to meet all grant and funding requirements.
- Reconcile and balance all general fund and bank accounts for compliance and reporting.
- Prepare financial reports as required by federal, state, and local funding agencies.
- Monitor and track expenditures of state and federal grants to ensure compliance.
- Prepare and submit claims for state and federal grant reimbursements.
- Project and forecast fund needs, identifying surplus funds for potential investment.
- Analyze expenditures versus budgets, forecasting adjustments, and reporting to supervisors.
- Maintain general ledger accounting systems and prepare periodic balance sheets and statements.
- Compile and prepare data for financial surveys and internal reporting.
- Provide detailed financial documentation to auditors and support audit processes.
- Assist in preparing and presenting financial reports for the Finance Committee and Board of Education.
- Independently perform bookkeeping and accounting tasks, including balancing and reconciling accounts.
- Review expenditures to ensure they align with itemized budgets and fiscal policies.
- Utilize Skyward and other district financial systems to maintain accurate financial records, including journal entries and reconciliations.
- Manage student billing processes, including meal counts, fee waivers, invoicing, and direct certification data uploads.
- Audit and oversee secretarial fee waiver data entries, credit card balance reports, and related transactions.
- Apply Illinois Public School Finance and governmental fund accounting principles to district financial operations.
- Assist in managing core fiscal services, including budget development, accounting, student billing, and purchasing functions.
- Develop, implement, and monitor internal control procedures to ensure accuracy, consistency, and compliance in financial operations.
- Other duties as assigned.
