Position: High School Activites Director 
Position Type:  Full-Time, Non-Unit Leadership Role 
Start Date: July 1, 2025
Starting Salary: $118,000 DOQ

Position Overview:

Tartan High School is seeking a dynamic and innovative Activities Director to oversee all aspects of athletics, fine arts, and club activities at the high school level. This leadership role requires a skilled and driven professional with experience in program management, community engagement, and effective communication. The ideal candidate will be a forward-thinking, solutions-oriented individual who can foster an inclusive, engaging, and high-quality extracurricular environment for students.

As the Activities Director, you will be responsible for supervising and collaborating with a team of coaches, advisors, and support staff to ensure the success of the school’s athletic programs, fine arts initiatives, and student clubs. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the student experience, enhancing participation, and driving continuous improvement across all programs. Strong skills in organization, budgeting, facilities management, and conflict resolution are essential, along with a passion for empowering students and staff alike.

 


Key Responsibilities:

  • Program Management & Supervision:
     

  • Oversee all extracurricular activities including athletics, fine arts, and student clubs, ensuring each program aligns with the school's educational goals and values.

  • Supervise, mentor, and support coaches, advisors, and support staff to build a strong, collaborative team culture.

  • Develop and implement strategies to increase student participation and engagement in extracurricular activities.

  • Understand and follow MSHSL bylaws and ISD 622 policies. 

  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement:
     

    • Analyze the effectiveness of current programs and suggest innovative changes to improve participation, quality, and overall success.

    • Stay up-to-date with trends in student activities and develop forward-thinking strategies to enhance the school’s offerings.

    • Provide targeted support to middle school programs and athletic directors.

    • Conduct regular evaluations of coaches, advisors and staff; solicit feedback to support growth and accountability.

  • Communication & Stakeholder Engagement:
     

    • Serve as the primary point of contact for parents, students, and the community regarding extracurricular activities.

    • Foster strong relationships with external organizations, local businesses, and community members to support the school’s activities.

    • Communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, and other stakeholders through meetings, newsletters, social media, and other platforms.

    • Address and resolve any conflicts or issues that arise between students, staff, or parents related to extracurricular activities.

  • Facilities Planning & Event Coordination:
     

    • Lead the planning, scheduling, and execution of athletic events, fine arts performances, and club activities.

    • Coordinate logistics for events, including venues, staffing, materials, transportation, and other resources.

    • Ensure events run smoothly, within budget, and are executed at a high standard.

    • Work closely with facilities staff to ensure the safe and efficient use of spaces for all events and practices.
       

  • Budgeting & Compliance:
     

    • Develop, manage, and track the budget for all extracurricular programs, ensuring effective allocation of resources and cost control.

    • Secure funding and sponsorship opportunities where applicable to enhance program offerings.

    • Ensure all programs meet Title IX, ADA, and other equity and accessibility standards.

    • Maintain accurate records of eligibility, participation, and student-athlete performance in accordance with MDE and MSHSL requirements.


    Qualifications:

    • Experience & Education:
       

    • Master’s degree in Education, Sports Management, Fine Arts, or related field. Licensed school administrator preferred.

    • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a leadership role overseeing athletics, fine arts, or extracurricular programs at the high school or similar educational level.

    • Proven track record in event planning, budgeting, and facilities management.

    • Demonstrated experience in managing and mentoring a team of professionals, including coaches, advisors, and support staff.
       

  • Skills & Competencies:
     

    • Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to engage diverse populations.

    • Ability to resolve conflicts diplomatically and foster a positive, inclusive, and collaborative environment.

    • Innovative thinker with a passion for improving extracurricular programs and increasing student participation.

    • Experience working with diverse student populations and understanding of their unique needs and interests.

    • Proficiency in technology tools for budgeting, data management, scheduling, marketing and communication.
