Description
This position implements a quality reading intervention program that is research based with a focus on differentiating for the three tiers of MTSS; providing instruction that supports, supplements, and extends excellent classroom teaching; analyzing school reading data and planning for future literacy needs; and instructing students individually or in groups to enable students to develop literacy skills.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- 3 years of teaching experience
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college
LICENSURES, CERTIFICATIONS AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Valid Illinois Professional Educator License with a K-9 Elementary Education Endorsement registered in Lake County.
- Reading Specialist certification
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Comprehensive knowledge of reading instruction and development, including the distinction between reading skills and strategies and their respective roles in literacy growth.
- Proficiency in using individualized and group-based reading interventions and programs to support diverse learners across developmental levels.
- Familiarity with informal and formal assessments in reading and the ability to integrate assessment results into instruction.
- Knowledge of the MTSS framework, including Tiers and their application in reading intervention.
- Understanding of state and national reading standards, curriculum scope and sequence, and developmental progression from Pre-K through grade 12.
- Cultural competence and sensitivity to linguistic and ethnic diversity, with awareness of how these factors impact reading development and instruction.
- Skill in identifying reading gaps and learning needs using research-based models and data-informed approaches.
- Ability to design, adapt, and update lesson plans and materials that align with student needs, curriculum standards, and instructional goals.
- Strong understanding of child development and its influence on reading acquisition and literacy readiness.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, fostering strong relationships with students, staff, and families.
- Leadership in staff development and collaboration, especially related to reading instruction, intervention strategies, and MTSS.
- Knowledge of educational theory, research-based practices, and instructional methods to promote literacy across content areas.
- Strong classroom and behavior management skills, supporting positive and structured learning environments.
- Proficiency in educational technology tools to enhance reading instruction and student engagement.
- Commitment to ethical standards and professional conduct, including maintaining confidentiality, following directives, and seeking clarification as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Provides reading instruction in varied settings, including one-on-one, small groups, and whole-class environments.
- Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including gifted students, special education students, English learners, and speakers of non-standard dialects.
- Develops, adapts, and aligns reading curriculum and lesson plans with academic standards and individual learning needs.
- Selects, evaluates, and utilizes appropriate reading resources for students across all ages and skill levels.
- Assists in the development and implementation of individualized intervention plans, modeling effective strategies for instructional staff.
- Facilitates and actively participates in MTSS meetings, contributing data-informed insights on student progress and intervention outcomes.
- Designs, implements, and evaluates reading interventions for individual students and small groups.
- Identifies student strengths and areas of need across all aspects of reading using assessments, observations, and performance data.
- Develops and maintains data collection and management systems, analyzes data, and recommends targeted interventions based on findings.
- Utilizes assessment tools and creates program reports, including those required by state reporting systems such as the Illinois Interactive Report Card.
- Coordinates school-wide access to instructional materials to support reading instruction and interventions.
- Screens classes to identify students requiring more in-depth reading diagnostics or support.
- Engages in ongoing professional learning, staying informed about current research and best practices in reading education.
- Collaborates with colleagues and families to assess, plan, and implement reading interventions, while promoting strong home-school communication.
- Maintains accurate and confidential records of student progress, concerns, and parent communication.
- Reflects on instructional practices, engages in self-evaluation, and adapts strategies to improve effectiveness.
- Performs other related duties as assigned, supporting the overall literacy goals of the school or district.
