REVISED Position: Long-Term Special Education Teacher (Grades EK-8)
Location: Regional School District No. 1, Northwest Connecticut

Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Long-Term Special Education Teacher to provide temporary support while the regular teacher is unavailable. The successful candidate will provide individualized instruction and support for students with diverse learning needs in grades EK–8. The successful candidate will deliver individualized instruction and support for students with diverse learning needs in grades EK–8. This role will primarily involve both resource room and classroom-based teaching in close collaboration with general education teachers, service providers, and families. This position is expected to begin at the beginning of the school year; August 19, 2025.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and deliver individualized, data-driven instruction aligned with IEP goals

  • Work with students in small groups and one-on-one to support academic, behavioral, social, and emotional growth

  • Administer valid assessments to determine student performance levels and instructional needs

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with state and federal regulations

  • Collaborate with general education teachers to create inclusive learning environments

  • Work closely with related service providers and behavior specialists (e.g., BCBAs) to tailor student programming

  • Lead and participate in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings

  • Support and supervise paraprofessionals working in special education settings

  • Utilize specialized tools, technologies, and strategies to differentiate instruction

  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Valid Connecticut teaching certification in Comprehensive Special Education (endorsement #165 or equivalent)

  • Wilson Language Training certification preferred

  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

  • Commitment to inclusive education and student-centered practices

Additional Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background check, including:

  • Educational verification of employment history

  • Department of Children and Families (DCF) background check

  • State and federal fingerprinting clearance

Working Conditions:
This is a full-time position in a supportive and collegial school environment, located in the scenic Northwest corner of Connecticut.


Physical Requirements:
The position requires the ability to:

  • Move about the classroom and school building as needed

  • Work with students at various physical levels (sitting, standing, floor-based activities)

  • Lift or assist students with mobility challenges, as necessary (up to 25 lbs)

  • Respond quickly to student needs in both classroom and non-classroom settings

Compensation:
BA Step 1 or as recommended by the Superintendent. Please refer to the Housatonic Valley Regional Faculty Association Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) for detailed salary schedules.
