Qualifications:
- Prior experience on 504 team
- Knowledge of the Frontline 504 System
- Complete working knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Pub. L. No. 93-112, 87 and the amended 2008 ADA legislation and how it applies to schools (students and employees)
- Complete working knowledge of Roselle Public School Policy and guidelines for 504/ADA
- Working knowledge of acceptable and appropriate accommodations for students and employees according to their disability
- Good communication skills
- Availability to participate in 504 meetings during the school day
- Availability to work during the summer
Responsibilties:
Section 504 is a federal civil rights law that prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Section 504 ensures that students and staff with medical or other disabilities have equal access to an education and to employment. Qualified students and staff may receive accommodations and modifications planned by persons knowledgeable about the students/staff, the meanings of evaluation data, and placement and accommodation options.
Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, each school district that receives federal financial assistance must designate at least one employee to coordinate the district’s compliance with its responsibilities under Section 504. If a district has 50 or more employees, it must also designate at least one employee to coordinate the district’s compliance with Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Most school districts designate one employee to serve both of these roles. This employee is often known as the Section 504/ADA Coordinator. This is a 12 month position.
- Coordinating and monitoring the district’s compliance with Section 504 and Title II of the ADA, as well as state civil rights requirements regarding discrimination and harassment based on disability;
- Overseeing prevention efforts to avoid Section 504 and ADA violations from occurring;
- Implementing the district’s discrimination complaint procedures with respect to allegations of Section 504/ADA violations, discrimination based on disability, and disability harassment;
- Investigating complaints alleging violations of Section 504/ADA, discrimination based on disability, and disability harassment.
- Maintaining current Frontline 504 System and lists of all students/staff district-wide
- Maintaining secured hard copies of all 504 files and plans
- Coordinating revisions to district policies and procedures related to Section 504/ADA, as necessary, to ensure that they are up-to-date and consistent with current requirements under these laws. Reviewing and Updating Roselle Public Schools 504 Manual with advice of district legal advisors when needed
- Ensuring that the Genesis school data system reflects accurate notation of all 504 students
- Meeting with individual 504 school teams (district wide) to ensure compliance is met at all Roselle public schools
- Facilitating the implementation of the district’s policies and procedures related to Section 504/ADA, and ensure that they are applied consistently across the district and at each school building
- Providing professional development to all 504 school teams in federal/state laws and regulations
- Participating on district level committees when requested
- Participating in 504 eligibility meetings and plan development meetings when requested
- Developing a working knowledge of current laws, regulations, and guidelines related to disability discrimination in public schools, including Section 504, Title II of the ADA as well as rules and guidelines adopted by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR)
- Becoming familiar with resources and information available from OCR and request technical assistance when needed.
- Attending trainings on Section 504/ADA and share information with district administrators and staff
- Placing purchase orders and maintaining budget for 504 compliance
- Coordinating Section 504 /ADA grievance procedures.
- Serving as the school district’s liaison to the Office for Civil Rights (OCR complaint resolution and corrective action plan implementation).
- Advising the district superintendent and school board regarding Section 504/ADA compliance issues and needs.
- Assign 504 Frontline accounts as needed
