Description
Job Title: Special Education – ASPIRE Teacher (18+ Students)
Reports to: Campus Principal
Dept/School: Special Education / Assigned Campus
Work Year: 184 days
Base Salary: Teacher Pay Scale
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Provide students receiving special education services appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to promote intellectual, academic, emotional, behavioral, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills needed to function successfully in their community, with an emphasis on teaching independence skills and improving their vocational skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor's degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required Special Education Certification
Knowledge of special needs of students as well as strategies for teaching vocational skills
Ability to instruct students with significant learning needs
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Knowledge of Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee process and Individualized
Education Program (IEP) goal setting process and implementation
Ability to utilize research based strategies related to independence and/ or vocational skills and
transition services
Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
Experience:
Minimum of 2 years of special education teaching experience at the secondary level is preferred
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
Transition Related Responsibilities:
Conduct assessments with students and parents related to transition services to ensure student
strengths, preferences, and interests are addressed.
Develop transition services for student's annual IEP.
Provide information to students and parents regarding education, training, agency support, and community resources.
Act as liaison with outside agencies to help link student to possible services.
Develop nonpaid training sites in the community for Community Based Vocational Instruction classes.
Assist campus in being compliant with TEA State Performance Plan Indicator 13.
Instructional Strategies:
Develop and implement lesson plans, IEP goals, and data collection methods that fulfill the requirements of district's vocational curriculum programs and show written evidence of preparation as required.
Develop and implement lesson plans that reflect a combination of direct instruction, small group, and independent learning based on the needs of each student.
Instruct students on skills addressed in IEP goals.
Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
Utilize instructional materials provided for teaching pre-requisite skills.
Provide a highly structured day in which students are consistently engaged.
Student Growth and Development:
Conduct ongoing assessment of student achievement through the analysis of data and ongoing classroom evaluations.
Provide information to parents regarding Transition, including available adult agency sources and adult opportunities.
Assume responsibility for providing information on extracurricular activities (Special Olympics, Miracle League, parent trainings) to parents.
Provide self-care, medical, positioning, and feeding assistance when needed.
Classroom Management and Organization:
Create learning environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, emotional and behavioral development of students.
Manage student behavior in accordance with Student Code of Conduct and Student Handbook.
Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Provide necessary training to ensure paraprofessionals assigned to the classroom work effectively with students.
Communication:
Establish and maintain open communication with parents, student, principals, teachers, employers, and cooperating businesses.
Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
Professional Growth and Development:
Participate in professional development activities to improve independence/ job-related skills.
Keep informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
Keep informed of State Performance Plan indicators related to transition planning.
Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other required documents
Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.

Must be physically capable to manage behavioral concerns through physical restraint, if needed. Must be able to lift 50 Ibs. Ability to work in a variety of working environments at training sites in the community. Move classroom materials and equipment as well as miscellaneous items at training sites as needed. Possible irregular hours when needed to observe employed students, work with employers, develop job sites, etc.

The Special Education Department maintains an expectation that all staff will assume shared responsibility for the health, safety, and confidentiality of all students and adults; which may include implementing, supporting and documenting behavioral intervention strategies and/or providing school health, related, and personal care services.
