Responsible To: Director of Exceptional Education
Job Goal: To provide occupational therapy to children with disabilities through direct intervention or through consultation with teachers and staff, as appropriate.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide a program of therapy to meet the individual needs of students with disabilities when occupational therapy is needed for the student to benefit from special education.
- Assist and guide teachers in observing, describing, and referring students with learning problems, which may require the intervention of occupational therapy.
- Employ reliable assessment procedures, techniques, and standardized tests necessary for thorough and accurate diagnosis of students' needs and behaviors related to occupational therapy.
- Work with members of the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) team to design activities related to achieving success in the educational environment, i.e., in development of fine motor skills, self-help skills, handwriting, visual perception, sensorimotor skills, etc., as related to the school setting and its requirements.
- Provide therapy directly to students in support of academic goals and indirectly through consultation with teachers and staff who are involved in the day-to-day education of the student in the classroom.
- Provide and assist in implementing recommendations for the classroom concerning compensatory strategies, adaptive equipment, assistive technology, curriculum adaptations and modifications, sensory diets, positioning, and safety issues.
- Provide in-service education as well as consultation to teachers, school staff, and parents on topics related to occupational therapy.
- Prepare and maintain thorough, accurate records for individual students receiving therapy, including evaluation reports, IEP's and related paperwork, daily progress notes, summary of progress reports, and Medicaid documentation.
- Participate in a program of staff development activities in order to promote own professional growth.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
