Job Description

Title:       School Nurse

Position Purpose:

  • Provides health care nutrition services, leadership and consultation within the programs at LSP (Head Start, Title.
    Developmental Preschool) so that the students of the Fayette County School Corporation, the families, and the
    community as a whole will be assisted toward attaining their maximum health potential.
Essential Functions: Other duties may be assigned

? Assist the administration in developing the health and nutrition programs for Head Start.
? Maintain up-to-date cumulative health records on all early childhood students.
? Plan for identification and follow-up of students with specific health needs.
? Assist parents of early childhood students in developing attitudes for obtaining and utilizing resources as they
may need to solve family health problems.
? Conduct programs as required by federal, state, and local policies.
? Arrange for students who may have a disability and/or students who may require special accommodations.
? Carry out Head Start Program Performance Standards in accordance with program policies.
? Assist in preparing required reports for Head Start Policy Council, Health Advisory Board, Head Start
Coordinator as well as federal, state and local agencies.
? Contact and/or visit homes of Head Start students when necessary.
? Provide health and nutrition education for volunteers, parents, students & staff.
? Provide emergency care for illness or injury.
? Interface with other agencies.
? Participate in all recommended training programs, conferences, courses, and meetings.
? Maintain own regular and prompt attendance.
? Maintain appropriate appearance.
? Maintain a professional attitude, conducts self as a role model for students and families, and works
cooperatively on the team of school staff.
? Promote good public relations for the School Corporation and community.
? Remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substance abuse in the workplace throughout his/her
employment in the corporation.
? Effectively utilize web based tracking programs.
? Adhere to the Head Start Code of Conduct.
? Effectively complete other job duties as assigned.


Equipment:
  • Uses medical equipment to provide health care to students/staff, including, but not limited to, blood glucose monitor, stethoscopes, thermometers, sphygmomanometers.
  • Uses personal computers.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, symptoms, diagnoses, treatments, first aid, illnesses and injuries, nutrition, and related areas.
  • Ability to diagnose and provide care for ill or injured students.
  • Ability to convey appropriate medical information to school district staff or medical professionals to ensure a proper maintenance in the school setting.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide, and perform arithmetic operations as needed for position.
  • Ability to understand, apply and use personal computers and software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Powerpoint, the Internet, Outlook, electronic mail).
  • Ability to problem solve job-related issues.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals and students with special needs.
  • Ability to follow oral and written orders from supervisors, administrators, physicians, and to coordinate work with principal, teachers and others.
  • Ability to describe orally and in writing school health services provided, issues and concerns regarding school health.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff and others contacted in the course of work.

Physical  Demands:

  • Must pass a physical exam every 3 years and complete a TB test annually. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, bend, and twist.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and assist students with diaper/clothing changes. While performing the duties of the job the employee occasionally may visit a child’s home.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

Qualifications Profile:
  • Bachelor or Associate Degree in nursing. License from State of Indiana to practice as a Registered Nurse or Licensed
    Practical Nurse. Holds and maintains a valid Driver’s License.
License or Certificate:
  • Registered professional nurse, designated as R.N. as defined and determined by state law, and currently licensed in the state.
  • Current certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
Other Skills and Abilities:
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to practical situations. Ability to establish and maintain
effective working relationships with students, peers, families and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and
concisely in written or oral communication. Knowledge and use of C.P.R., First Aid, AED, and Heimlich maneuver.
Must have dependable transportation to make home visits. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district
requirements and school board policies.
